The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
|
Pony Express dates to the original monster trucks, having existed in the early/mid '80s and surviving to this day. It's been through several bodies (from its original metal '67 Mustang fastback body to later fiberglass bodies). I was actually fortunate enough to see the real truck in person back in 1992- it came to the Lebanon Fairgrounds back when the local fair had monster trucks each year. I believe '92 was the last year for that.
Well, in the spring of '04 Hot Wheels announced they were coming out with Pony Express, and I was thrilled. It hit summer '04, and was among the first trucks to have the blinged, oversized UGLY rims. That was a problem I solved for other trucks by doing wheel swaps. At least until I ran out of wheels, now I just pick up a few trucks a year instead of all of them. That was a problem I could live with... What I couldn't live with was that Hot Wheels decided to slap the Pony Express labels on an existing casting. A Cheetah. Now Pony Express screams "MUSTANG" with its very name. In all twenty plus years its existed, its been a '67 or '68 Mustang fastback. Considering how many totally fake castings Hot Wheels had already made for its monster truck line, leaving out this truck (which would sell to Mustang collectors as well!) boggles my mind. They did the Spiderman Cheetah, the Sting/Vette King Corvette, '57 Chevy Avenger, and a Cadillac hearse that was only loosely based on Cadiac Arrest. So why no Mustang? Especially considering that Ford is one of the USHRA's sponsors, and GM isn't. I fixed it, and used a Hot Wheels body to boot. I did this in the summer of '04 and took it to Fest that year and again in '05 (it was part of my massive diorama that year). I still think this is the best custom I've done to date. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The real truck can be seen here: http://monsterphoto.iwarp.com/pontur.htm |
