On a thread about a month ago or so, Sean had me point out some of the unique features on demo derby cars. So my question back to all that know anything about banger racing is how do drivers go about building their cars? Do they swap engines/transmissions from other cars? Other than running steal thread through the hood, what other reinforcements are allowed? On demo derby cars, drivers are usually allowed to weld the doors shut and weld the bumpers directly onto the frame. Does this apply to bangers as well? Are all size and makes of models open to run in the same class together or do they have separate classes? Have they started racing light duty trucks yet? Do they have a 'Chrysler Imperial' type of car that is so dominant that it is banned from competion at certain tracks? Do some drivers cheat by stuffing the frames of their cars with square tubing or concrete/cement? I see that most cars have an H frame behind the driver for protection. Are they any other type of drivers cage? crafty in thought with ?s

Sometimes drivers swap engines and transmissions, but I think certain tracks don't allow reinforcements on cars.
Classes depend on engine size, the main classes are under 1800cc/2 litre and unlimited (any car as long as its over 1800cc). There are seperate meeting for vans etc. Hope this helps a bit.... |

other 'reinforcements' are just general bolts here and there, door plates, and thats about it really, thats legal. Also theres weld on the drivers door, and box section on the drivers door, i think thats all legal. class as daniel says is engine size, unlimited, under 3litre, under 2 litre, under 1600cc under 1400cc under 1300cc metros, then theres small vans, big vand, coaches.. Some tracks have all types of American cars banned, but no specific car. Hope this helps mate. |

I can't really contribute more to this, but all bangers have to have either bonnet bolts, which go down through the bonnet and secure it in place, or bonnet triangles, which are comparatively new and stop the bonnet going back into the driver, or a mixture of both. Tracks can disallow certain types of vehicle, after an unfortunate incident with a HUGE crewcab Chevy pickup at Standlake a few years back they were forced to ban all pickups/huge American station wagon type vehicles |
