Dave Weber and I went to Shrock Brothers on Sunday, mired with rain. Oh well. Does no good to complain about things that we have no control over. Tom and Dave Shrock make their own diecast cars. By hand. The whole process. The casts are pewter, and they put them together, by hand. The detail is as painstaking as it is magnificent...it's quite clear that these gentlemen have slide rules in their eyesockets. They originally had a body shop that specialized in Studebakers, and later, Volvos, and the homestead's located in Coalport, Pennsylvania, about twenty miles north of Altoona. After their retirement, they hit on the notion of casting their own diecast cars. They started with 1:43s and 1:55s, but later settled on 1:72 scale. All vehicles are exclusively Studebakers. They have a website that can clue you in a lot better than I can... www.shrockbrothers.com Well, where does one start? You start off with a mold...and you inject hot liquid metal- in this case, pewter, into a mold...and then to cool, the mold swings around on an extension. Each mold, after it cools, ejects what's known in the business as a shot... ![]() ![]() ...and then, they get put together, and painted. Everything's made from scratch...wheels, bases, interiors...glazing. Here's some in the middle of the process: ![]() Finally, you get a finished product...which looks like this... ![]() ![]() Now, isn't this stunning? More to come tomorrow! |

Very cool! Love the finished product. All those naked cars lined up like that reminded me of Swiftys workbenech. He posted a picture of it a few weeks ago. |

Cut down on quantity for a month or two and focus on quality for a month or two and you'll be able to purchase more than two Shrock Brothers cars.

It looks like they don't make interior side panels on their cars. |

These are 1:72 (exact ) scale! The interiors on all 9 of my models are painted but there is no room to present side panels. I don't know of any other company that makes side panels in smaller models than a 1:24 scale model ( Franklin Mint). You can find them in the FM 1:24s, but I sincerely doubt they will be present in anything smaller. And the FM models sell for over $125 - not the $70 charged ! This comment seems to be mixing apples with oranges! Please note! The cost will be increasing in June another $10-$15 per car. Raw pewter is about twice as expensive as zinc (zamac) . This is the first increase since Shrocks started making the 1:72 scale models over 10+ years ago! They also will no longer recaste any models. When the run of 20 sells out, they will be gone for good! Thankfully, I was able to get a few repeat castings in the last couple of years- but this will not be repeated. So anyone thinking about maybe getting 1 or 2 etc; NOW IS THE TIME! Although George did not come home with any new models, this visit, I did get a 34 Land Cruiser 4 Dr Sdn and 55 Speedster. In fact the pink and charcoal model in the pic is mine! Needless to say, these are my favorite castings in my entire collection! |

Beauties indeed SAK! Keep posting pics, I enjoy them! I looked at the Shrock Brothers site and saw that they made 1/43 scale cars, but none were available. I'm leaving to go on vacation tomorrow morning, but I'll have to purchase a Studebaker in 1/72 scale when I come back. I looked at the cars available in 1/72 scale and it's hard to make a decision on purchasing just one. Their are so many that I would love to own. It's hard to choose just one! Are there only 20 of each color variation made? |

They've discontinued everything except 1:72 for vehicles, for all intents and purposes. Everything else is not available anymore. They still have a very ample inventory, Stutzie. I think they have the phone number on the site if I remember correctly. Tom or Dave can answer your questions. As far as the twenty copies rule goes, I think that will begin to apply in June. Dave indicated they're trying to streamline operations a little bit more efficiently... |

Now, this one's breathtaking...![]() Here are some other beauties lining the display shelves... ![]() ![]() What they do here's awesome, in every sense of the word. If you truly appreciate the effort and the love that go into these pieces, you come up with the money to have one. Or, THEM, as a collector Dave deals with in Europe feels. Either way, there's nothing else like this. Nothing. |

Twenty models are casted at a time - not color variations. But from George's pix, it appears they have made more than 20 of the newly produced 34's Thus maybe 3 or 4 models might be painted the same colors. I recall the 34s had some 2 tones and there were also some single tones in varous Studebaker colors. For example , I suspect there are only 3 or 4 other 55 Speedsters painted the same as my pink and charcoal beauty! |

Swifty wasn't able to come that day. He will come the next time we go. He'll either be in the back seat... ...or the trunk. I've just picked up Abductions for Dummies from Borders. Should help immensely. |
