We got a call this morning, right as Lucy was heading out the door for work. It was from a hospital in Florida, notifying Lucy that her somewhat estranged sister in FL had been admitted to the ER last night, and the news was very bleak. Someone needed to get down there, fast. It's a heart-breaking story that I won't get into here, but Lucy is the only sibling still in touch with her, and just barely at that. The task fell to her, to go. A long, draining day of phone calls back and forth to the hospital, and between five different siblings (who don't all get along), as well as countless rounds of internet airline and car rental reservations ensued (not to mention the Mapquesting, and packing, and looking for long forgotten legal papers), all trying to make the earliest possible flight down. It broke my heart at one point when I simply took the phone from Lucy's hand, and put her head on my shoulder, as the reality of losing a sister struck home and Lucy cried uncontrollably for ten minutes. Lucy's best friend was there to help, and at my suggestion agreed to fly down there in my place with Lucy for an indeterminate length of time. Just what Lucy needed more than anything, right now. In the midst of all this chaos, I was at the computer and on hold with Southwest Airlines when I came across a very sad e-mail from John Reilly (StupidSquirrel) telling me his Mom had just passed away. Whew. God, did I feel for him, after all he's been through. I got Lucy and her friend Vicki to the airport an hour ahead of departure, and had no choice but to leave. I made a couple of nearby stops, trying to shake the numbness from myself, but it wasn't working this time; and as I walked out of a Wal Mart near the airport, I heard the roar of a plane that had just taken off. I looked up and saw a blue Southwest Airlines 737, and glanced at my watch, realizing that theirs was the only SW flight departing at 6:05 PM. That was them up there. I stood in that parking lot staring up at that plane, as I have done countless times with an airport in the area, seeing the setting sun glint off it's body; this time realizing that someone I love is on that plane .... and she's going to be very sad when she gets where she's going. I watched that plane disappear into the horizon, and remembered that John Reilly had just lost his Mother .... and felt very, very small. Thank goodness for the kindness of people like Peter Worden today, who came through with an unexpected gift, and Mark Appellof who kept Peter's secret for oh so long, and Dave Antonelli who offered whatever help I might need right now, and Bill and Rob for their messages of support. All small bright spots on such a hard, hard day. It's people like these who make boards like this worth visiting in the first place. Good people. Thanks, guys.

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!

A very sad day indeed.
Here's hoping Lucy's sister makes a 100% comeback. |
