Today's Car of the Day is Matchbox's Lotus Exige.

In 2004, the Series 2 Exige was introduced. It features a 1.8 L 16-valve DOHC Toyota/Yamaha engine that produces 190 bhp with the Toyota engine designation of 2ZZ-GE. Compared to the Series 2 Elise, it has a front splitter, fiberglass hardtop roof with roof scoop, rear engine cover, and rear spoiler. The sole purpose of these aerodynamic additions to the base Elise is to create more downforce (almost 100 lb of downforce at 100 mph (160 km/h) in the Exige versus 13 lb at 100 mph (160 km/h) in the Elise).

This is probably my favorite Matchbox casting. I've always loved the idea behind the Elise/Exige. Make the lightest, most bare bones street legal car you can while maintaining at least a bit of daily driveability and make it go fast! (Around the turns :P )

This is probably my favorite variation of the four released thus far, but I'll let you decide:

Support your local demo derby.

The metalic blue paint used is the best non superfast paint job I've seen on a MB. I actually thought about using this same version of this casting for when I do cotd in June. I remember seeing a couple of these at the 2006 North American Auto Show in Chicago at the McCormick Place. They are as about bare bones as a car can get. Thanks for the pics Jedi!

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
After what I had read above, I didn't remember the blue paint as being metallic, so I went and looked mine over and now notice a light metalflake content!

I have the blue, yellow, and anti-freeze green colored ones, so is that striped version a Superfast? I must have missed that one. Can we see a side view? Thanks, Robbie.

The black one is an exclusive from a 10-pack.

It's the only one thus far to have rear lights tampoed on.

Thanks, I think I may have a sigh of relief, as if it is from the ten pack that had ten all unique cars, then I think I have it as I have not removed any of those cars yet. (But I eventually will! I think it is in temporary storage with some other multi-packs). :)

the ten pack that had ten all unique cars

This rings a bell, I'm pretty sure it was the same one with the red Alfa, forklift, Austin Mini milk van, a GT3, and some others.

Ten years ago Matchbox had reversed course from the Zero City era and was starting to make nice cars again (like this one). It was short-lived, and we got more garbage from them again for a few more years, and now the ship has been righted, and once more we're getting beauties like this. Matchbox's course has been changed so often in the last twenty years, sometimes I wonder if Mattel has a GPS unit in charge of the brand instead of a human being.

I like little cars like this that can go fast in a straight line AND around corners and curves. Colin Chapman's mark survives on today's Loti, where weight is the enemy.
