Today's Car of the Day is Hot Wheels' Dairy Delivery, which as best as I can see is based on a 1980s Divco 206.

"Divco Club of America"

In 1937 the Divco was completely redesigned with a welded all-steel van body and a snub-nosed hood which was used with virtually no change up to the end of production. A huge new plant was built on Hoover Road near Detroit to manufacture the first snub-noses which appeared in service in 1939.  The doors were of the folding, semi-automatic type, and the power unit was still a 4-cylinder Continental. In 1940 the first insulated and refrigerated unit was built. But production was stopped so the plant could be used for war materials during WWII.  After the war, the 1946 Divcos were basically similar to pre-war, and came in two wheelbases, the 100-3/4 inch Model UM and 127 inch model ULM. GVW were 9000 and 12,000 lbs. and engines were 4- and 6-cylinder Continentals. In the early postwar years production briefly reached 7000 annually, more than double the best pre-war figures. In 1954 refrigerated vans were offered as a regular production option, and the forward-control Dividend series made its debut in 1956. Continental 4- and 6-cylinder and Hercules 6-cylinder engines were standard in the 1950s, while in the 1960s 6-cylinder ohv Nash engines were used in addition, and there was also the option of a Detroit-Diesel 3-53N 3-cylinder 2-stroke diesel.

Perhaps one of only a few Hot Wheels castings to rival the VW Drag Bus in popularity, and certainly the only modern one.

This version, from the Flying Customs series, happens to be one of my favorites. I count myself quite fortunate to have have found one and had the sense to buy it, even at the not-so-nice price.

Nice choice! Divcos are not well represented in 1/64...

Pretty nice flame treatment on this one. I had not seen it before. I know I got the "got milk" version. I also like the graphics added to the rear view of this model. Nice choice for cotd!!

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
I was taken aback a little to see that Jedimario revived a post that dates back to March. OR, did you mean to type in MAY?

The Divco Dairy Delivery (or "DD" as collectors call it) is an odd casting that certainly appeals to many, and is sort of the poor man's Drag Bus. There are so many great color schemes on this casting, plus uncountable excellent customs.

The nice thing about this truck is that it is still basically a "mainline" HW item, as while it is sold in a lot of the premium, RLC, and promo/convention offerings, it has never really been out of reach of the person shopping at a variety store. Up until a few years ago, you could buy one as a mainline (we're overdue on a mainline revamp), and although more expensive, issues like the one pictured here can be bought off a peg if you have the right timing!

Chevy's don't need no sympathy votes, they win on their own merits.

And that may be why their haven't been many Bowties in the COTW pics for awhile, they are known to be winners.

I fail to see the attraction that the DD gets, I am not a big fan, I have 2 the "Got Milk" one and one other somewhere in a plastic tote. :P

*Looks at the top of the page and sees a M2 Machines '54 Chevy as the current car of the week (albeit I'm about to change this for an Aussie Ford Falcon)*

Well, I wouldn't say it's been a long time since one was run. ;) Then again, I can't disagree with the fact they are proven winners...

I never knew the Dairy Delivery was based off of a real car from the 80's

Always thought it was cool that HW offered a version of the Divco Milk Truck. Think I might still have a couple of the "milk" versions of the van.

10 years on and in spite of some of the newer DD releases that have come out I still think this is one of the best.

The casting is an acquired taste, one I never fully acquired. But I can appreciate some of the better looking ones.

I wish they'd run this casting as a mainline once again, maybe the usual 3 re-colors during a year, so there would be plenty of them to go around. Despite the scalpers.
