Today's car of the day is Hot Wheels' '69 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow.

Wikipedia

Following in the manufacturer's tradition of building luxury vehicles, the standard wheelbase Silver Shadow measured 5.17 metres in length, weighed 4,700 pounds, and had a base price of 19,700 dollars in the first year of production.

The Silver Shadow was produced from 1965 to 1976, and the Silver Shadow II from 1977 to 1980.

The design was a major departure from its predecessor, the Silver Cloud. This was the first single bow Rolls-Royce, in contrast to its predesessors' double bow designs. The cars exterior design was by Rolls-Royce's chief designer, John Polwhele Blatchley. Aside from a more modern appearance, the Silver Shadow introduced many new features such as disc rather than drum brakes, monocoque construction, and independent rear suspension, rather than the outdated live axle design of previous cars.

The Shadow featured a 172 hp (128 kW) 6.2 L V8 from 1965 to 1969, and a 189 hp (141 kW) 6.75 L V8 from 1970 to 1980. Both powerplants were coupled to a General Motors-sourced Turbo Hydramatic 400 transmission, except on pre-1970 right-hand-drive models, which used the same 4-speed automatic gearbox as the Silver Cloud (also sourced from GM).

The car's most innovative feature was a high-pressure hydraulic system licensed from Citroën, with dual-circuit braking and hydraulic self-levelling suspension. At first, both the front and rear of the car were controlled by the leveling system; the front levelling was deleted in 1969 as it had been determined that the rear leveling did almost all the work. Rolls-Royce achieved a high degree of ride quality with this arrangement.

Here's a Rolls-Royce, Redline style! Is this the only Rolls to have an opening hood in 1/64?

There's a funny story behind this model. In 2000 I was very new to the Internet and had just discovered eBay. I purchased a lot of eight or ten Yat Mings from a seller in Pompton Lakes, NJ. Pompton Lakes happens to be my original hometown so since they had a storefront I asked if I could come pick them up in person. They agreed, so that weekend I drove out to NJ to pick up the Yat Mings and browse their store. When I got there, they couldn't find my Yat Mings (they promised to mail them to me if they ever found them- they never did and the store has since gone out of business). But they did have some (overpriced) Matchbox on display (the owner held up a collector's guide and had not so mint pieces at MIB prices)...and one solitary Hot Wheels Redline at all of $2. So this Roller came home with me.

Out hunting for JL
I always wondered how this got made as a redline as it doesn't fit with most of the other cars issued back then. It is okay and I have mine from childhood, but it is not a favorite. It seems pretty good as a casting goes, overall, though. I did enjoy the story, too! :D

I think that like most Redlines, the casting is a little crude. It looks ok from the front, but what's going on at the back? It looks more like a Peugeot 404.

For that reason, I prefer the Matchbox version.

This was strictly a 'me too' exercise by Mattel! In the collector's catalogue, when it came time to shoot pics, they didn't have a resin ready, so what they did was take a pic of a Matchbox Silver Shadow, and airbrushed redline HW mags on it!

I have the exact model Sean has. Got it at a temple bazaar in my neighborhood for a buck back in 1974. If you'll notice, the finish is in enamel...many of the others came in red spectraflame...influenced by guess what.

By the way, the Impy Rolls has an opening hood. Not an exact match, but as good as it gets.

Of all the cars in my collection, this one has one of (if not) the most interesting stories on how I acquired it.

In those early years of ebay, this casting was easily attainable. Only the mintier condition spectraflame colors went for upper double digit prices. The silver ones could be had for $5-$10 in near perfect condition. I ended up with two different interior colors, but dropped the ball in never getting a black roof version before they got too expensive to bother with.

Mattel actually had a few sub-series in the early redlines, one of which included foreign cars such as this Rolls, the Maserati Mistral and the Mercedes 280SL...not counting the hot rod VW or VW surfer van.

The Rolls can be found with black roof, though not often. It can also be found in spectraflame colors, though comparatively rare as the story goes that RR was not impressed with the flamboyant colors and ordered Mattel to cease as part of their licensing agreement. I've never seen one, but have heard on more than one occasion of spectra painted issues being repainted in the more acceptable to RR silver-grey. That explains why the vast majority of this model are found in that "stock" RR color, making it one of the few non-racecar enamel issues prior to '73.

 I have always liked adding Rolls Royce's to my collection - goes with my love of British cars/buses/lorry's, etc. I am pretty sure mine came from The Crescent Department Store (Marshal Fields - another long gone store) in downtown Spokane, WA when it was new on the pegs. :D Really do like the opening hood and I think you are right - only Rolls Royce I know of in small scale with an opening hood. A bit surprised that Lonestar Impy or Husky/Corgi Jr. never offered a Rolls Royce. Really did enjoy the background story to your version Sean.

A bit surprised that Lonestar Impy or Husky/Corgi Jr. never offered a Rolls Royce.
But...Lone Star / Impy *did* offer a Rolls Royce...not sure it's the same model, and the Impy is a drop top (drop head) with a butterfly hood, but they *did* make one.

I remember mine from childhood well. I didn't realize at the time that it would turn out to be rare, or at least that's the impression I get from reading the comments above. Mine was dark aqua Spectraflame with a black top which to me looked entirely appropriate for a Rolls Royce. Tasteful and rather understated. I had the other two European models mentioned too: My Mercedes-Benz 280SL was the same dark aqua as my Silver Shadow and my Maserati Mistral was, ahem, purple.

Thank you Wes - another case where the old memory chips just aren't what they used to be. And I do, indeed, have the Lonestar Impy version in my collection.

I knew I remembered reading this somewhere...going through my jammers and found these:
