The Mustang II is a Mustang too!

A nice piece! Dale's famous for running Chevrolets, but he actually drove for six different manufactures in Winston Cup competition (all four competing GM divisions, Ford, and of course this Dodge). |

ACTION, in their peak days, sold some pretty nice race cars by mail only. Equivalent to the RLC club by HW, Action had a race club that you paid a fee to get in on their monthly color catalog mailing list. They would offer special run cars for members only, with deadlines to CALL them and order! First come, first served! Their stuff was much better than what was being sold in the chain stores, and probably led the way to more detailed and accurate store cars, especially in 1/64. I don't know if the club still exists, as two things happened due to the rising popularity of NASCAR which may have created the downfall in the collectors club--- 1.The club in my belief, oversaturated itself with collectors by offering too many cars at small production runs and made it frustrating for the diehard or completist fans (and expensive!). 2. More and more cars were made available in stores by other producers, and the quality also went up. Too many cars to choose from, and I was plenty satisfied with what I had, or what I could find in the stores. Now of course, we can only get about 10 or 12 drivers and their cars, all from Winners Circle (Action) at the chain stores. Sorry, folks, for going off the track on Action!! But Thanks, Swifty, for reminding us facts of a rapidly changing hobby by choosing this car for today. Is this Dodoge Charger week?.

Dale Earnhardt's first NASCAR Winston Cup car was the featured vehicle ten years ago today. |

While I was not a big Dale Earnhardt fan I was big into NASCAR collecting and was a member of the RCCA Club - it was one of those that was supposed to offer folks lifetime membership. At times it was overwhelming with all the "club only" cars that they offered and the prices kept creeping up and up. When I lost interest in NASCAR I really didn't worry much about that lifetime membership. The cars they offered were top notch and well made and detailed. Really put the other offerings of the day to shame...and then the others started to improve their game and were more readily available in retail locations. |

I became a Dale Earnhardt fan the day of the 1979 Daytona 500, the first Winston Cup race televised flag-to-flag on network TV. I was looking for a GM driver, preferably a newcomer, on whose bandwagon I could jump on. Earnhardt was a rookie in that race (in the Mike Curb #2 uh, Oldsmobile? Pontiac?), but he showed me a lot of potential. I remained a fan of his right up until his death in the 2001 500 and still am a fan of "The Man In Black" to this day. As a result, I became a Dale, Jr. fan in 1997, his first year in the BGN series, and a Kevin Harvick fan when he took over the #3 ride, renumbered #29. Junior may have retired from racing, but I still like Kevin Harvick, even though his team owner decided too go over to the Dark Side (read: Ford), and I also like several of the newer drivers in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series today (Chase Elliott, William Byron, Austin Dillon). This Charger would be a nice addition to my Dale Earnhardt collection if I ever find one. I like it a bunch! |
