The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
|
Have a pair of interesting names for new 2009 models... The Dodge Journey and the Hyundai Genesis. Why do I get the feeling we'll see Steve Perry and Phil Collins show up in the ads for these two? What's next, the Ford Exposé? The Chevrolet Chicago? The Honda Hall & Oates? I'm just glad to see they didn't get alpha-numeric names. I hate letters and numbers for a car. Cars should have exciting names, like Mustang, Impala, Thunderbird, Hornet. Not bland "names" like G6 or 380SEL. |

I like the alphanumeric scheme if they keep it constant. BMW, for example, gives all the sedans and coupes derived from them three numbers. The first number indicates which chassis the car is (1, 3, 5, and 7), while the next two numbers (usually) indicate engine size in liters. Then there will be a couple of letters after the three numbers that indicate special atributes for each car- i for injection, x for all-wheel-drive (I think), ect. It's much easier than keeping of with trime level designations in my opinion (Civic DX, Civic EX, Civic LX, what? ) Not that I think you didn't know that already, just thought I'd give you my reasoning. Now if half a car company's cars follow something like this and the other half have real names, that's just confusing. |

I'd agree with Swifty on this. I want cars named after something real or at least an actual word. Other than the Chrysler 300, few car models with numeric names have much heritage or at least with US companies this is the case. |

You also have to consider that not many American manufacturers have used the alphanumeric method. But one that comes to mind is the GT-40. I suppose it could have something to do with it not being a street car, but it's American nonetheless. And I don't think I need to go into all the legendary foreign cars to say that name scheme doesn't matter much to our international friends. I do love a good regular name for a car though. Outback, Fusion, Viper, Espirit, Jetta, Karmann Ghia, Titan...all really cool names. |

The GT40 is more British than you may think. There are some alphanumeric cars with legacy- the Datsun/Nissan Z cars immediately come to mind. As does the Mazda RX-7, Toyota 2000GT, any Mercedes or BMW, etc. And for companies that have always named their cars in this manner, that's fine. But for the rest, why the 'me too' attitude? I'm looking directly at General Motors, in particular Pontiac. |

Yes Pontiac seemed to have whimped out with the classic names, and they had so many of them, GTO, Firebird, Tempest, Lemans, Parisienne, Catelina, etc etc. And thats a real shame, I have no problem with sticking an engine size after a name likie "BOSS 302" but what the .... does G6 tell me about the car. I want real names not a bunch of numbers. Sorry guys.

I hope they start spellng "Jimmy" as "Jimi" How about an Oldsmobile "Gn'R" instead of a Grand National?  would any one buy a "Joplin" or a "Diddley" come on car manufacturers, where's your creativity? |
