Medical issues in my family

Some of you know my 10 year old son is faced with serious medical challenges, I want to let all my diecast friends know just what they are now. In 2006 he had Ewing's Sarcoma, its a bone cancer and he had it in his right thigh bone, they (ortho specialists) removed about 4" of his thigh bone and salvaged his leg by building him a new thigh with steel and doner bone and the small bone from his lower leg to carry the marrow. A year of chemo therapy and he was as good as new, Until last month when he developed a tumour on his skull. The Ewing's has returned, A week ago the tumour was removed in Neurosurgury and he starts another year (approx) of chemo tomorrow. This will be supplemented by some radiation therapy in about 6 weeks. They cut out several square cm's of his skull and replaced it with titanium and ceramic. The long term prognosis is not good, His survival over the next 4 or 5 years will be about 25%. We are praying for a miracle here. The good news is that the tumour on his skull appears to be the only hot spot, The bone marrow pathology came back negative, as did the catscan of his chest, (Ewing's although a bone cancer migrates to the chest in its later stages and once there is always fatal) and the bone scan showed only the one area in his skull as a source of activity. Also that tumour although having eaten its way thru the skull and into the jelly like substance between your brain and skull had not penetrated thru the jelly into the brain. As far as surgury was concerned is was a simple as neurosurgury can get. (only 5 hours on the OR table).

What does it mean here, well sometime I will be away, unexpectetly, sometime my mind will wander more then usual and I will not make much sense, like asking questions that are already answered. And I will probably not be so imaginative and creative in doing my part to keep this one of the better places to be on the net in the diecast world. I miss this place when I am away.

Thanks all for the kind comments posted earlier, and I don't want this to become a medical forum, so your welcome to PM me with any questions or comments, so lets get back to talking about diecast. And I am embarking on building my biggest 1/64 diorama yet. 30" x 20" and will post pictures when I get some of it set up. (My wife and son are in Halifax and I am holding down the fort alone) Had some outside the home renos to get done this week and then its back to work. Got to pay the bills somehow. Thank goodness for medical insurance.

Thank you for the details on his condition. I know everyone here is keeping both you and your son in our thoughts.

I'm very glad they caught the tumor before it made its way into your son's brain. With luck the chemo and the radiation will be effective, and he will be back to normal by this time next year! :)

And don't worry about turning this into a medical forum- I hope you'll continue to share updates on his progress with us all, and there are no problems with this thread becoming medically detailed.

On a side note- we miss you when you're away as well. But we understand why and we're all hoping he has a full and speedy recovery!
