This Prius came today...I've been eye-balling it for a while, and finally went ahead and got it. It's pretty cool - I'm diggin' it.

Great to see a diecast company make a small scale version of one of the most important modern cars built. Good looking pics David.

Very nice! Matchbox has a Prius coming in the lineup next year, but for the moment Tomica and Majorette have the only ones on the market. This one looks good as a patrol car.

What a worthless car. I guess it's popular enough to be die-casted though eh? I hope They don't actually use them as police cruisers, they seem to be quite poorly suited for that job.

That worthless car you refer to seems to have the technology that a good portion of new cars will at some point have. It's one of the most important cars in the last 20 years easily. Toyota took a gamble on a new technology and it's paid off. Ford, GM, and Chrysler just saw all the $ that was making them filthy rich at the time from SUVs/Trucks and turned their backs on trying to battle Toyota with the new technology. Now you can see where Detroit is at here in the USA. Overseas where they sell more diversified cars, Detroit is doing actually pretty good.

Toyota just recently sold their 1,000,000 Prius not too long ago worldwide.Think around half or just a bit less of those have been sold here in the US.

I'm sorry to David for hijacking your thread, but I disagree with Rob's statement.

I know I'm on the fringe with this one. I agree that the technology is significant, but the Prius (and all hybrids) has become much more about politics and status than it probably ever intended to be. Don't believe me? Just look at the latest GM hybrids.

And check out the new Escalade Hybrid site:

http://www.cadillac.com/escaladehybrid/htm...escalade_hybrid

"...the uncompromising 2009 Escalade Hybrid represents intelligent indulgence."

And the Q&A section:

"Will people know I'm driving a hybrid?"

OH YES THEY WILL!!!

I'm sure you see where I'm going here.

------

Sure, other companies aren't as bad, but the theme is still present with most of them. Buy a hybrid to make yourself feel good. That's what it's become, and that disgusts me to no end. I guess my problem is not the Prius itself, but all the deceitful shenanigans around it. It's become so bad that I can no longer see anything with "hybrid" slapped on it as a good thing, even though at its core it really is a decent technology.

Anyway, rant over. Agree or disagree, whatever, I'll still debate it if you want. I'll try to not be so angry anymore though

Exactly why I don't like them. Too "trendy" and also, how environmental is that battery going to be come the car's end of the life?

Yeah, gotta agree with what those two said.

The technology is good, but I just don't like the cars, the people who drive them, and why the drive them.

On another note, I heard that because they are so quiet, people are unaware of them when they cross the road, so a company over here has developed a sound device you can fit to a Prius that makes the engine noise of a normal car when it drives along!

I've noticed that there are two type of Prius drivers around here- type 1 drives very slowly and is probably the kind of person who should be driving a Prius (concerned about fuel economy). The other type drives faster than I do (in a Mustang!), drive maniacally and generally act like they own the road just because their car is a hybrid.

Now I'm sure there are thousands of perfectly normal Prius drivers out there. It's just that these are the people I notice driving them.

I see the points you guys made. Fair enough. I'd agree with you on the full size suv hybrids being a joke and more about status than anything in reality.

You are absolutely correct! On my last road trip, I was did a respectable 65-75 the entire time. We got passed left and right by Prius-es (Prie-i?) who were flying down the road. It seems hard to get phenominal mpg's at that rate of speed.

It is. They're terrible for highway driving, that electric motor doesn't help much outside the stop and go of the city.

I keep thinking of putting a sticker in my back window saying "Hypermiling target: 1 mile per gallon" just to mess with the hybrid owners... ;)

Yes indeed. The many years on the road, my only criticism is how the driver behind, especially those able to see over my skateboard, thinks they can tailgate...I believe motorcyclists get the same treatment.

Curiously, I read criticism for the Prius but wonder if those have actually driven one or know the facts?!!! I've now been stereotyped. :fiddle:

Let's see, where do I start?

I do understand the Prius is a walking target for any positive or negative criticism...that is expected. As an owner, it is a joy to drive. It is spacious. I dig the silence while idling and then a peppy take-off when you hit the pedal. With more city driving, it is reaching 50mpg and at least 45mpg on the highway...not to bad for a "luxury" car. I'm not worried about the battery. The average number of annual miles is at about 15,000...it is expected to reach 180,000 (the battery, that is). I do plan to sell it soon and actually make a profit. Hopefully, the 2010 model will capture much more mileage...possibly even 80mpg. Fascination with gas mileage is not a new thing to me...having driven a CRX HF for 21 years as well. As a child growing up in the 60s, I did grasp some of the concerns for "ecology" ... and then with the 70s oil embargo making quite an impression. My only dorky feeling about the Prius is visiting Hollywood which is nearby...it seems every other car is a Prius...I never have a paper bag available to go over my head.

I made my posts, and nearly every post on here, with the assumption that people understand that there is exception to every secular rule. I don't think that all Prius (and hybrid) drivers drive them for that reason, but I do think that any person who has differing reasons is in the minority.

Oddly enough, there is no doubt a smaller percentage of Prius drivers who bought one solely for the image, as the car is not available in non-hybrid form. In other words, the Prius is a better fit for you than any other car out there, you just drive a hybrid because that's the only configuration the Prius is available in. Whereas an Escalade Hybrid driver could drive a typically configured one just as easily.

Thank you Kimmo for a very insightful post. I've always liked the Prius for the bodystyle rather than for its hybrid-ness. I find hatchbacks to be very versatile anyways...but I digress...the market out here has flourished for hybrids in general. One major dealer had stopped taking orders for them as there was a 12 month wait.

However, there's a small car lot near me that has three recent model Prie-i for sale. I drive that way about once a week and they've been there for about three weeks now. I find it rather interesting - perhaps they're asking too much? I don't know, but haven't bothered to look as it's on the other side of the street from where I'm driving.

Interesting reading on the car and it's target audience...sounds like everyone around here should be driving one. But since they drive like the people mentioned in this thread anyway, they probably envision themselves as hybrid-proof.
