Porsche Cayman comparo-Yat Ming/ Hot Wheels; Both look pretty good

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
At a different posting (Yat Ming section) there were comments about the HW version being a good casting and the Yat Ming not being that much better, etc.
So I decided to put them side by side and give them a quick measurement and eyeball treatment. The fact that one car is a metallic orange (HW) and the YM version is red, it made the eyeball comparison easier than a light vs. a dark paint job.

YM-Smaller in scale based on length, it comes out to roughly 1/80 with the width not quite as well proportioned to the length, but it looks pretty okay to me overall.
This casting has good detail engraving, and some nice paint details. The interior looks (not removed) very good for the size. A VERY nice steering wheel, that looks accurate, highlights the inside. The wheels are unlivable! If you are a customizer, no problem solving this. The rear quarter window has a cast bar, and this is incorrect. It should have a fixed glass panel with small rubber outlines. Another easy fix if you can customize and don't fear altering your castings. The only issue I have with the casting's skin is the roofline sits up a bit high and peaks in the center of the roof rather rhan flowing back from the windshield.

HW-Comes out to about 1/70 in length and 1/68 in width, so the car is proportioned well. The overall shape is more flowing and looks good from most angles. Engraved details are done well, and detail painting is very good for a "mainline" car. The interior looks correct for what you can see, but the steering wheel is very formless and not attractive. The glass is correct for this car, with the rear quarter glass showing in place with windows down. The major skin problem I have is the oversized wheel wells to support the oversized thinking and wheel use of most HW castings of late. The wheels don't look overly large for a upscale sports car of late, but the wells just eat up too much body metal.
So, here again, we have two different castings that are both pretty good. Choose the one with the minor flaws you can most accept. It should be noted that if you want the Yat Ming version, it's twice as much as the HW one, because the YM's are sold in two packs at CVS stores, so you may get a car with it that you don't want.
As far as my choice of HW or YM, I like both cars. but I'll stick with HW's for an overall better looking Cayman.

I don't have the original comparo pic (hopefully Ivan does), but I do have the pics that inspired the debate:

Yes- try drugstores. CVS had them most recently, and some diecast stores (like Kiddie Kar) get them as well.

Cool. There are only Walgreens and Rite Aid drugstores here, and no Kiddie Kar stores...

Support your local demo derby.

Kiddie Kar is a locally owned diecast hobby store in PA. Not a chain type of deal.
