SIMPLEX (US) 1907-1919

The Simplex Automobile Company located in New Brunswick NJ, was founded by Herman Broesel who had taken over the bankrupt firm of Smith & Mabley that had previously manufactured the S & M Simplex.
These cars featured 50 hp engines and used special order bodies from assorted coachbuiling companies . The cars featured chain drive and in 1914 they acquired Crane Motor Car Company. In 1915 the company reorganized and the new marque was called the Simplex-Crane
Model 5 . It was a high quality produced vehicle with appealing coachwork. During WWI they produced aircraft engines for the war effort. In 1917 the company was acquired by Wright-Martin. Although automobile manufacture ceased, assembly of the Crane chassis being fitted to special ordered bodies. In 1920 the former Simplex firm was acquired by Hare's Motors who had also just completed acquisition of Mercer and Locomobile . But in 1922 Henry Crane purchased the assets of the company that carried his name. He then
produced the Crane-Simplex until 1924.
A model in small scale was produced by High Speed of the 1912 Simplex which seems to be a stylized knockoff of the larger Matchbox model. This wasmade available by Readers Digest as a promotional and was also readily available in tray sets in selected stores asrecent as the early 2000s.
