AUTOCAR (US) 1897- * This firm originally began as the Pittsburgh Motor Vehicle Company. But the name was changed when the company moved to Ardmore PA , a nearby suburb of Philadelphia. The first cars were well made and sales were successful. In 1907, the company began commercial truck production. This venture was very successful and resulted in the cancelation of future automobile production. In 1954 Autocar who had moved to Exton PA, became a division of White Motor Company who in turn became part of Volvo Trucks N America Inc. from Sweden. Then in 2001 Autocar was acquired by Grand Vehicle Works Holdings (GVW) It is noted that Autocar presently claims ownership of the oldest vehilce nameplate in continuous US production. The only known model in small scale of the automobile was reportedly made in 1960 by Charbens in their "Old Crock Series" It is identified as representing a 1904 model. Also Matchbox in their Real Working Rigs (RWR ) truck series recently issued a trash/ refuse removal truck model. |

Since I have never encountered an Autocar passenger car in real life, here is a picture of a 1902 model taken from a book:

I have seen photos of a die cast dump truck made in the 60s or 70s - I think the company might have been one of the Litl Toy / Mercury / Gibbs group. |
