As Swifty is having all the fun with his "Limiteds" in the COTD section, I tought I'd show my latest strictly "Regular" one - the #81-1 Nissan President. One of the original Japanese luxo-barges:

These were never exported - and you REALLY got to be somebody before they let you climb into the back of one of these and drive you around Tokyo - "Lost in Translation" like...

Gorgeous car! Is there a Limited version of this one available yet? I couldn't find it on the checklist, but sometimes I get them mixed up with the Toyota Crowns...

Yes, that was TL #23 - so quite a while ago. But to be honest, apart from the wheels the original was so good, it didn't need much to turn it into a Limited:

But you can't compare the President to the Toyota Crowns - the Toyota Equivalent is the Century. Tomica made it, but no Limited yet and no re-issues yet - so they are quite pricey on the bay. But I guess I'm gonna bite the bullet eventually and get one...

Support your local demo derby.

The front end looks like a '75 Caprice that was straightened out. I've seen it all now, a Japanese land barge on wheels with Mercedes and mid 70s full size car influences.

Looks nice :P It's funny, but considering how technically advanced the Japs are compared to the rest of the world (cars included), it's hard to believe how cars like the Toyota Century were around as long as they were. 1967 to 1997 - 30 years the 1st gen Crown was produced for, and itbarely changed a bit.

Wait a minute - selling a car that has looked the same for 30 years and has barely changed a bit. Sounds like something the Russians would do.

Sounds like Ford, see the Model T, Ranger, '79-'91 and '92-'98 LTDs/Crown Vics plus Fox body Stang . . .

The 1998 through current, 2009, Grand Marquis and Crown Victoria (Police Interceptor, anyway, now that the civilian model has been discontinued) has been an even longer run, with even fewer changes, than the '92-'97 Crown Vic (which at least received a significant new grille in '93 and a rear-end/tail light re-do in '95).

And Checker, and we can't forget AMC with Hornet turned Concord turned Eagle and the Gremlin turned Spirit turned Eagle SX/4. ;)

Looks like a slightly different casting to me? The grill and taillights look different.

Now that you mention it...the grille is different - never noticed that before!

Will have to investigate...

The rear windows are different as well now that Swifty pointed out a few differences.

Nice toolings.

By the way, there's a statute here: you can't buy a Grand Marquis, or any model under the Buick nameplate, unless you've reached 65. Only then can you truly appreciate the column shift in a Grand Marquis.

Hahaha!! That's great!

As for the differences, I figured they were different model years.

Well, I've looked a bit into it and I can't actually find a President with the style grill on the "regular" model. All the picture I found were more like the "Limited".

Maybe the original casting was a bit crude on the front and they fixed it up for the "Limited"? Some of the other "Limiteds" seem to have been sharpened up a bit too, though not to this extent.
