A more important comparison, Johnny Lightning Vega Casting vrs Hot Wheels new Vega casting. They are not exactly the same year, but close enough to compare![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Casting Detail Both have some great detail, the vents in the trunk show up nicely, The HW even details the door locks, Johnny has a nicely detailed rear end. Both have excellent fron grill treatments, although HW could of painted the bumperettes in silver to make it more realistic. Johnnie's casting is almost twice the weight as HW's Tires/Rims once again JL takes this section with RR Uniroyal white letter tires and great looking rims, HW went with HW standard plastic and rims Tampos Johnny went with a thin black pinstrip whereas HW goes for a triple white pinstriping, You don't really even notice the HW flame detail in the pinstriping on the rear fenders. Paint Both are red, but Johnny has this Vega in at least 6 other colours. Different hoods are cast in so the white rim is different to match teh hood detail. HW opted to continue the white trim on teh rear deck too. Interior Johnny's white interior looks much nicer especially with the black dash HW's has an all black interior. Price Johnny $4.92 Hot Wheels $1.00 Once again JL makes a much better casting but the price differential make sthe HW an appealing casting and a neccessity in any Bowtie collectors garage. |

Another good review James. I have 4 different versions of the JL Vega including the Wyatt & Davis one along with the Baldwin Motion, '07 Holiday Classic version, and the '73 GT which was the debuted version from JL. Also have both color versions of the HWs so far as well. Hard to fault too much with either casting imho. The JL is really nice and has an opening hood and the rubber tires don't hurt the cause much either. For the $, the HWs is hard to turn down too. |

Stock & custom, you're covered by getting both. ![]() They're both really good castings and I have both in my own collection as well. And unlike the real thing, they won't rust!

Good review, James. Nine times out of ten a JL compared to Hotwheels is going to be better in terms of quality and detail, but with such a significant difference in price I'd be just as happy with the Hotwheels. |

your absolutely right it is like comparing a Granny Smith apple to a crabapple, but each has its uses and jewels and this HW Vega is a little jewel. I can hardly wait for the plethora of repaints to add to my VEGA collection

Very nice review James, Since my collecting habits are not trying to get every casting made. I much rather pay a few extra bucks for a well made model.

Im with Jim on this one. HWs did a great job no doubt i have 2 of the yellow ones already. But Quality is gonna beat quantity again. Johnny lightnings overall detail beats up the HW again. I'll still buy both just not every repaint HWs puts out. Great comparison James. Thanks heres another place i'll have to check daily.

I am sorry to say this but, there's too much fuss in the pictures and the camera isn't really focusing on the cars and their details in particular. I wasn't able to spot the details you mentioned in the review. But a good compare nevertheless. |

I think James did an excellent job reviewing the 2 vegas. In his honour, i present a few pics of some yellow ones, cuz i know James likes yellow chevies. please note that i've swapped out the wheels on the JL so it's not OEM. I like that both vehicles have almost the identical profile, and both have the side marker lights and door handles. The JL has badging, tail lights and license which the HW does not have. However for pure look, i prefer the front end of the HW with it's airdam, the hood, the rear spoiler, tail pipes and definitely the lower stance. In summary I'm leaning towards the HW. Since I put the racing wheels on the JL, I may put the two to a test to see how they run. Will it be JL or HW? Edited by harry, May 23 2012, 05:46 PM.
