Made the 70+ miles journey west on Sunday night to attend my first derby at Taylorville. Quite possibly one of the largest venues I've ever seen hold a derby before. The tracks is roughly the size of a football field and drivers could pick up speed very quickly. Overall #s for the show are actually less than what Cumberland Co has which is one county directly south of me. Christian County is located in central IL, about 3 counties over from me. That said, they run 4 different classes. Officiating was poor to say the least as they let a hometown guy in with a fully welded full size car when the rules clearly state welding is only permitted from the A-arms forward on the top frame rails. Some of the officials would wave both the red and green flags at the same time trying to get all drivers to stop. Others held one flag in one hand and their sodas in another. What a joke. They did did pay out over $2,000 for first place in full size and the other classes made up for the team derby that was the full size class. They only had 16 full size cars, so they ran 2 qualifying heats and one consi for them. Other classes had the following: Midsize-7, Compacts-23, mini-vans-7. All but 3 or four full size cars were fully built and leafed making for long qualifying heats. The other 3 classes more than made up for the all the drama in the full size. Add in several nasty fist fights broke out in the pits that resulted in 3 extra police cars rushed in to restore order plus several ambulances were needed, and you have one whopper of a night. All the non full size classes were run as one shot features. Onto the pics. 1st Heat ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The black car would have his driveshaft snapped in several pieces as a result of this monster shot. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!

Looks like a decent derby- and I like the FWD rule for the mid-size/compact classes. The '70s compacts put too much of a hurting on the newer cars- Pacer wagon versus a Topaz...pretty easy to guess which one's going to win. |
