The good part here, NASCAR is introducing a Mustang into the Nationwide series next year in limited action. The bad part, all it requries is some Mustang stickers to the COT. Ugh! ![]() To read the article if you can stand them, click thefollowing link. Autoblog Mustang NASCAR And NASCAR wonders why their ratings keep sinking. NASCAR stands for National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. We haven't seen anything closely resembling a true stock looking car since perhaps the late 70s or a bit later. Heck, none of the stock cars that the 1/1 cars are based on even exist in real life. My idea from several months ago that I posted in a thread still stands. If NASCAR wants to get some life back in the sport and TV ratings, they should run real modified 1/1 cars. Whatever the biggest engine that each individual makes would be the one run for each make. Run stlighly tweaked stock engine blocks. Ford could have a Mustang, Chevy the Camaro and Doge a Challenger. My few standards to follow in my dream is that they be V-8, RWD, and offer a true 2 door model on the real 1/1 plus they use the stock body/sheetmetal. Allow for full roll cages, fuel cells, and other basic safety equipment. This would put some much need excitement back into what has become a super dull sport to watch. The cookie cutter sticker cars are a joke. Why even bother to have races if they aren't even stock? |

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!

While I like your ideas for making NASCAR exciting, it doesn't get rid of all the obnoxious 'young guns' that have also made NASCAR intolerable. That car is a great big joke. UGLY and an insult to the Mustang name. However, AutoBlog is wrong:
NASCAR ran a series called Grand American back in the '70s, and there were a few combination Grand American/Grand National (now http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_American |

Zach, forget NASCAR, your motorsport already exists: http://www.konisportscarchallenge.com/ These cars have aftermarket exhaust, an aftermarket ECU, stripped interiors, and neccesary safety upgrades. Other than that, they are essentially completely stock. Some have added wings and of course they run race tires and brakes, but the powertrains of these cars are nearly identical to their stock counterparts. And no body modifications (aside from a spoiler on select cars, most noteably the Mustang). There is also the higher GT class, which allows tube-framed race cars that must conform to specific stock-car bodies (and engines to a certain degree), again with a certain spoiler being the only legal deviation from the stock car's body. ~$30 to go see those races usually, and that includes full paddock access and other racing events. They're also broadcast on SPEED, but not live. I think everyone here knows how I feel about NASCAR. At this point though, turning it into a touring car series would do it no good. The tube-framed cars they use now will go much faster than anything stock, and on those ovals things would get even more boring more quickly. |

Thanks for the link Rob. Sounds like my kind of series. Might have to investigate the series on Speed. |

Of course, you will be missing the American cars. There are Mustangs but not much else; perhaps the Challenger and Camaro will find their way into the series, they should be eligible if the Mustang is. There is a long list of cars that are eligible but don't get used though. |
