PONTIAC (US) 1926-2010

This marque originated as a lower priced companion to the already existing Oakland in the GM lineup. But the powers in authority opted to discontinue production of the Oakland soon after Pontiac was introduced. Production was successful and in 1959 they introduced widetrack wheelbase feature for the first time. in 1964 the GTO was introduced which is believed by many experts to be the first " Muscle Car". In 1967 a 2 door sports model with unique design called the Firebird was introduced. Production lasted until 2002. Now the Pontiac demise is momentary in order to thin out the existing GM line due to the recent horrendous economic depression. Also Pontiacs used in NASCAR have
been for many years and still are represented on the race track.

I was recently advised by Chris W that a 2010 Vibe is now on sale by GM. Thus the final production date should be changed to 2010. My error!

Models of Pontiacs are plentiful; especially when the Firebird/ Trans Am models are included. Small scale models have been issued by the following companies. But there is no guarantee that all have been included. Recognized are models by Hot Wheels, Johnny Lightning,Laramie, Matchbox, Muscle Machines, Racing Collectibles/ Revell, Welly, Kingstar, Matchbox, Racing Champions/ RC2/ RCERtl, Mini- Lindy ( plastic), Topper, Zeetoy/ Zyllco/ MotorMax , Maisto/ MC Toy , M2 Machines, Tac Cheong, Yat Ming, Universal Products Group, Action Performance/ Motorsports Authentics/ Winners Circle, Road Champs, Siku, MEGO and Tootsietoy. Actually, the list would probably be smaller of the companies that did not replicate this marque!

I agree. I realize it had to be, but still cannot fathom why GM needs 2 similar truck lines; Chev and GMC (?)

Count me in too...perhaps GMC would've been a better candidate for shut down?

The Matchbox model of what is probably the best known Pontiac worldwide: KITT from Knight Rider (from the 1999 Star Cars range):

Because GMC owners don't buy Chevy trucks. GM has done market research, and despite the fact that GMCs are just upscale Chevy trucks GMC owners would rather buy Fords than Chevrolets. Makes no sense to me either- but there's no accounting for people's tastes!

Oh, and here are some diecast Pontiacs:

I have just read in a couple of my monthly auto magazines that Pontiac will be selling only the Vibe in 2010. But if the dealerships are closed , I wonder where ? I doubt the dealerships could survive by just selling Vibes !
Thus we have the dilemma of when Pontiac actually ceases production 2009 or 2010? Time will tell!

Well, the production will actually stop this month, but the cars produced will be 2010 models.
