The car for today is Matchbox's '71 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser.

Wikipedia.com

The Vista Cruiser is a station wagon built by the Oldsmobile Division of General Motors from 1964 to 1977, which was based on the Oldsmobile Cutlass/F-85 model, but from 1964-1972 had a longer full-sized car wheelbase (120-121 inches) than the intermediate sedan chassis (115-116 inches) it was based upon.

Noted for the glass found in the roof over the second-row seating (which also included sun visors for the second row of seats) and for the smaller glass panels over the rear cargo area windows, this car was introduced to the public on February 4, 1964 as a 1964 model.

This body style was not unique to Oldsmobile, being shared with the Buick Sport Wagon, and was not repeated in future Oldsmobile mid-size wagons; however, the skylight concept was repeated with the 1991-92 full-size Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser wagon and echoed by its corporate sibling, the 1991-96 Buick Roadmaster wagon

For 1971, Olds brought back the full-sized Custom Cruiser wagon on the 98 chassis utilizing GM's disappearing clamshell tailgate, but the glass-roofed Vista Cruiser continued until 1972.

Got to give props to MB for making a 70s model American wagon. Seem to have a bunch of various opinions about the casting and especially this debut color. Let's hope they can crank out something a bit better in following releases. :D

I found one of these just last week! The good news is the color is being changed to something more realistic (a '70s vintage goldish-green as opposed to this neon green) as the production continues. The bad news is...I'm just not pleased with this casting. At all. This is the first dud in quite some time from Matchbox in my opinion. Which is a pity because this was one of my most anticipated releases of the year. I'm glad they did a great job on the Monaco as that was the other one. ;)

I don't think I've ever seen a real one, but I just think that it doesn't look right. Is it the awful colour, tacky wood panelling or the big wheels? I don't know, but I still want to add it to my collection.

Well, the colour was supposed to be a metallic green as per the old MB wagon - and they got the casting wrong. Sorry. I'll get a metallic green one if I find one - but it's no patch on the old Lesney casting. Still - 6/10 for effort...

It'll look better after I take one, and give it some kind of wheel swap and paint it in the orange metallic of the 1971 Cutlass Supreme my parents drove. On the real car, the 'B' pillars were curved, not flat, as on this one...and I also think it would've looked better in the scale of the HW 1970 Chevelle SS wagon.

It looks so much better in pics...had one in my hand at Target, but even for $1, I just couldn't do it. Let the bangers have it...I'll wait for a better color and better wheels.

You're quite nostalgic for one so young!

Then again, in the 80s I listened to the Beatles and Bob Dylan rather then Prince or Kajagoogoo... :P

I admit, I live in the '80s. ;) :bangles:

Monacos were a staple of my youth, getting blown to pieces on "The A-Team" and crashed on "The Dukes Of Hazzard". The Vista Cruiser was a later discovery, one that I fell in love with instantly upon seeing it. I love station wagons and detest SUVs and minivans. I love '80s rock/pop and hate rap and grunge. So yes, I'm quite happy in my little timewarp. ;)

Prince is one of the greatest frauds ever perpetrated on an American music buying public. And, given the roster of stars that have come down the pike in my lifetime, that's really saying something.

But then, Americans live for frauds. We love it. We hang on their every word as they stand and rail in our pulpits every Sunday; we elect them to public office based on the quality of pandering to our fears that they exhibit. We get angry because the rest of the world doesn't cotton to them like we do.

Here's what Prince is all about: take a good look at the album cover for 'Lovesexy'.

You know, this may not have the most replies or the most views, but I have to give this COTD thread kudos for still going three weeks later!

And in celebration, here are three color variations I have on this one already:

Posted Image

From left to right, neon green, gold-green, and green-gold. I think the last one is the correct shade for this one!
