Auto World has just announced that they will be bringing out their own line of 1/64 diecast next year. As of right now, no details on what cars will be coming have been decided on, nor does the line even have a name yet.

I am definitely excited to see what they're going to have forthcoming! Even though it's a little premature, I've added a forum for them here in the diecast section.

So this is the company that's run by Tom Lowe correct? This will add even more competition in the 1/64 scale adult collectible market if that's what they end up in. GL, M2, HWs, Autoworld, and JL all vying for one section of the market.

Will be good to see TL back behind a diecast brand again.

Things are starting to get saturated, not all these companies can coexist for long.

Well, I sure hope it isn't going to be more Muscle Cars (or Skylines, for that matter...) I am wondering what niche there still is. Well, we haven't seen many Skodas in small scale!

No one really knows what Tom Lowe is going to do, but American muscle cars would be a safe bet. Be nice if some US non muscle cars were done which are non existent in small scale.

Well, I sure hope it isn't going to be more Muscle Cars (or Skylines, for that matter...) I am wondering what niche there still is.
That "niche" contains about 5800 different car brands (all over automobile history) which have never been represented in small-scale diecast at all, compared with about 200 which have.

However, I, too, expect this new model car brand to concentrate on the same stuff as all the others, and to not be available in Europe. :(

Bear in mind that Tom Lowe was the founder of Playing Mantis, and PM was an innovator when it burst onto the scene in 1994. In ten years time we got muscle cars, British sports cars, Volkswagens, Buffy's 1959 DeSoto, import tuners, and more. And the only ones that sold well time and time again were the muscle cars and Volkswagens.

I expect that this new line will be feature a great deal of cars already available in 1/64. Mustangs, Camaros, Chevelles, Corvettes, Roadrunners, Chargers, Beetles- they sell. While making an Upton would be cool, it's just never going to happen. There aren't even any surviving examples to take measurements of, photograph, etc.

The sad story of Upton ends at World War II...when a Hershey area car collector donated the last known survivor to the war effort where it was melted down for scrap metal.

I am excited to see what Tom brings to the table. It's such a shame that we are in a recession because right now is a great time for die cast. HW and MB are still around after decades, JL is still on the radar, GL is really taking the lead, M2 is running a close second to GL, and now AW will be introducing a new die cast line. If it was 10 or 15 years ago, with the detail of the cars being cast today, collectors would be happier than Michael Moore in a twinky factory. Now if the economy would take a turn for the better and the big box stores would stock the cars we want, we could be die cast rich again.

Well, I wouldn't expect him to concentrate on Skodas and Auto Unions - but something different would be nice. We'll have to wait and see.

Auto World huh ? I used to order HO scale hop up parts for the Aurora slot cars from them back in the late 60s and early 70s... It would be really cool to see what they come up with in the 1/64 diecast world... With GL and JL pretty much leading the way, they got their work cut out for them !!!

That's odd- a bunch of posts were apparently stuck in an approval queue. Sorry folks! That was not intentional and the posts should now be showing. If anyone else replies to this thread and the posts don't show, please send me a PM.
