Today's car of the day is Hot Wheels' 1986 Volkswagen Golf GTI.

Wikipedia

The Volkswagen Golf Mk2 succeeded the Mk1 as Volkswagen's volume seller from 1983 and remained in (German) production until late 1991. In comparison to its predecessor, its wheelbase grew slightly (+ 75 mm (3 in)), as did exterior dimensions (length + 180 mm (7.1 in), width + 55 mm (2.2 in), height + 5 mm (0.2 in)). Weight was up accordingly by about 120 kg (264.6 lb). Exterior design, developed in-house by VW design director Schäfer, kept the general lines of its Giugiaro-designed predecessor, but was slightly more rounded. All told, about 6.3 million[2] second-generation Golfs were built.

I bought the five pack this car came in specifically to get my hands on this one. I had no idea this casting was still around- a pleasant surprise! Unfortunately, this is not the best it's ever looked (a black base like the older versions had would make a huge difference...oh and clear windows would do a lot to help too). That said, I'm just thrilled that this little casting is still available!

Wikipedia

The Golf Mk2 was available as a 3- and 5-door hatchback. Its sedan sister car (available as a 4- and a 2-door model) was again called Jetta. No cabriolet version was developed from the Mk2; instead, the Mk1-based convertible continued to be produced.

Trim levels included base, C, CL and GL and initially a range-topping Carat model (until 1985), later a GT (in 1987) version was also on offer. In North America, there was only a base model until 1986, in 1987 a GL and GT model, in 1988-1989, there was all three, and in 1990 until the end of its run there was again only a GL. In Japan the range consisted of catalysed Ci/CLi/GLi models all sharing the same 1.6 or later 1.8 liter fuel-injected I4 engines. In the course of the years, a host of "limited edition" models appeared on various markets, distinguished by cosmetic changes and/or an enriched features list.

New base engine was a 1.3 litre inline four; other engine offerings included 1.6 and 1.8 litre petrol fours and 1.6 litre naturally aspirated or turbocharged diesel engines. In North America, all Golf Mk2s had 1.8 liter petrol or 1.6 diesel engines (the GTI, while not a Golf model in North America, also had a 2.0 liter model).

I like it, but I'd like to see other versions of it.

Here are some of the other versions, but according to the site this is a retool, and not the original casting. If my old ones were handy I would take some comparison shots. Hopefully someone else can help out with that!

I don't think I have any old ones...might be a few laying around at home in not-so-great shape.

Oh, these babies handled beautifully and really flew as a GTI.

I just never liked the way they looked. The casting looks too flat and wide, but, hey, for a HWs it is ok. No vote for Car of The Anything, though...

I always liked the Hot Wheels casting over the Matchbox. The MB looks gigantic (especially width) next to this one! My guess is Hot Wheels took liberty with the width of the car to help the Golf work on their track sets.

I'm sorry, but with the red glazing, it looks horrible!

The MB was a rubbish casting. It was too tall and too fat, and the Hotwheels is definately a better casting although it has looked better.

The Majorette casting of the MK2 is the best, especially when customised.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
Well, the good news, it is back. I bet they had to do a little work on it to bring it back up to full production again, like make a new base design or interior, etc.
The bad news is the colored glass and overall look. But this is quite common in a five pack---the kiddie factor.
The good news is that generally a casting that is old and reappears will show up again in another run somewhere, maybe in the mainline. It is not cost effective to reinstate an old tool and modify it only to run it once in a five-pack with red glass.
The bad news is we don't know exactly what they plan to do with it. Fingers crossed.
