MONTEVERDI (CH) 1966-1984

Swiss racing driver Peter Monteverdi started designing racing and sports cars during the 1950s. Later he founded his own company in Binningen to produce luxury cars using American V8 engines, with bodies designed by Frua. During the 1970s those were replaced by relatively less expensive smaller sedans and off-road vehicles. When Peter Monteverdi died, his company died with him.

While no small-scale model is known of any of the regular production Monteverdis, Matchbox made a model of the Hai super sports car which in reality never reached full production. The Matchbox Hai was copied by the Wheeler company from Hong Kong.

This is one of the few real Monteverdi Hai 450 GTS in existence:

It normally resides at the Monteverdi Museum in Binningen, but here it is seen displayed at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show.

The Matchbox Hai (which BTW is German for "shark") looks most accurate without any of the labels it usually came with:

That orange Hai was my dream cruiser as a kid - I absolutely loved it.

Apparently the "few" Hais boil down to two or three. Two are known to exist, the orange one above and a red one in the states. No one's ever seen another one. Peter Monteverdi always refused to discuss figures.

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
A pity this one never hit full production- what a beauty! I have a few of the Matchbox around from my childhood also. If memory serves me, wasn't the Monteverdi 4x4 International Scout based?

I think you are right there, but I will leave the final word to the Prof ChF.

"Full production" was never really the case at Monteverdi, as far as I understand it.

They barely reached double figures AFAIK.

For those in love with Monteverdis as much as I was - here's the 1978 line-up from the 1978 German "auto katalog" - such beauties:

By 1982, things were looking not so hot:

The 4WD Safari was Chrysler based in 1978, yet by 1982 it was based on the Range Rover!

Yes, the Safari and Sahara were based on the Scout, and they were made in much larger quantities than the sports cars. Back in the 1980s some were even seen in everyday traffic here in Austria.

The Range Rover reference in the catalog is misleading. What they probably mean is that the concept is similar to the Range Rover. Besides, Monteverdi also introduced the four-door Range Rover, which was later produced by Land Rover itself.

I had no idea that Monteverdi had so many cars in their range. And I can honestly say I've never seen any of them!
