Today's car of the day is Johnny Lightning's 1971 Dodge Super Bee.

Wikipedia

The Dodge Super Bee was a limited-production muscle car from Dodge, produced from 1968 through 1971. The Super Bee model was resurrected for the 2007,2008 and 2009 model Dodge Charger Super Bee.

This is an unfortunate example of what's wrong with JL at the moment. This used to be an Ertl American Muscle casting, and it was a good one! Now the trunk has been cast shut (which looks horrible!), the front and rear fascias have been JL-ized, and the overall look of the car is now wrong compared to what was once a quality replica. When JL makes something from scratch they still (generally) do a good job. It's when they start raiding the corporate parts bin that monstrosities like this come up. Thankfully the Fury II and Hudson Hornet both translated much better into JLs (the RC castings generally do, it's the Ertl American Muscles that look wrong).

Wikipedia

Since the 1971 Coronet was only available in sedan and station wagon versions, the Super Bee model was moved to the Charger platform. Since the Charger already had an R/T muscle car version, the Super Bee was slotted in as the low-priced entry in the line at US$3,271. 5,054 were produced which includes the 22 with the Hemi engine.

The moniker was discontinued until the 2007 Super Bee, which was a Charger SRT-8.

1971 was the first and only year that a small block engine (340 4-bbl) became available in the Super Bee.

Although the 440 Magnum (4-bbl) was not an available option on the Super Bee for 1971, 26 are known to have been built.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought that. The model looked very strange to me and that explains it. But what's the deal with the strange metal hubcaps? It makes the car look like an old taxi or other fleet vehicle.

Support your local demo derby.

I saw this one at TRU when it was first released in the JL line. Yuck. It stayed on the pegs.

And being an ex-ERTL, I imagine that's it's bigger in size than your average JL?

A bit of a mis-fit then, in other words.

I had to rub my eyes - THIS is a J/L? Thanks to the comments, I now know what it is. If they want to compete against GL and M2 with this, then good luck!

One word for this casting, JUNK.
One big piece of junk.
I don't like it and never will.
I didn't buy it either.

And this is from a guy who usually has only nice things to say about diecast. :(

James, I have seen the real casting up close and personal in a hobby shop.
You're right, I don't usually have negative comments about any casting.
In this case, "you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear".
Applying a nice paint job and excellent tampos (graphics), does NOT make this a good casting.
Heck, I'll take many of the very early JL castings over this one.
This is case of "calling a spade a spade", pure and simple.
Making this casting with the Johnny Lightning name on it was HUGE mistake and let's hope that the powers to be at L.C.B. never use this casting again.

Cheers. Cobra

I agree wholeheartedly!

I don't often say this but... I looked for the model's good side to take the pics. I couldn't find one. The above pics are me making this thing look as good as it possibly can!

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
I was going to say derby fodder, but if it's as bad as it sounds from above, I'd be insulting the derby guys here....
Wow, I've never seen such a bunch of brutal comments. Perhaps this one should be in the WotD contest (WORST of the Day).
