Where did they get the Bel Air? The snow belt? Did you see all the red dust coming off it on impact? Get a 59 in factory new condition and do it again. Yea newer cars are safer but that thing was a rust bucket.

The irony of this statement is that I answered my own question earlier.

Without looking for a solution, one just happened to jump out at me. I was browsing the Internet Movie Care Database (I highly recommend this site!) and I came across this:

So, apparently, the banger racers in Britain will have a go in pre-'71 GM cars. ;)

Well yes I am a classic car lover and its depressing to see this happening but in the long run its a quite useful video to show how far the automobile industry has come at protecting their passengers. Thanks for finding that video.
