Support your local demo derby.

It's only for police duty, but at least the name is back in the Chevy lineup. With the Crown Vic set to be phased out soon, GM thinks it can gain some part of the market.

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
Ford withdrew an aging (not to mention paid for!) platform from this segment with no real replacement (the new Taurus police package is similar to the current Impala as a squad car, and let's face it, the FWD Impala has not sold well as a police car). Which means it was either unprofitable or they expect more competition from the new Carbon Motors and the existing Dodge Charger and perhaps anticipated this new GM offering.

Fleet sales, in general, are not lucrative to auto companies. That GM is going to the extreme of marketing a model not available in the USA otherwise for police duty tells me that the Pontiac G8 withdrawl has left them with excess production that needs to be used up. A pity we won't be able to walk into a Chevrolet dealership and buy one as a consumer, but let's face it. If more people had bought it when it was the Pontiac G8 Pontiac wouldn't have been axed in the first place. ;)

They will bein the public sector 5 yeasrs from now when the law enforcement agencies start to auction them off. I see a lot of old Police interceptors around here in civilian colors, they are a little rough around teh edges sometimes, but scare the daylights out of you when some redneck quickly comes up behind you. (Oh no what did I do now syndrome sets in)
