Wow! We just don't get displays like that here. All they do with Hotwheels and Matchbox in supermarkets and toy shops is just throw them into large bins so you have to rummage through them to find anything. |

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!

JA, almost all stores in the US sell diecasts this way, on pegs in toy sections, or in shadow boxes or hanging clip strips. The "BODs" as we called them ("Bins of Death") were very unpopular with both customers and store owners, as the merchandise would get damaged, cars break out of the packages, look dirty and then of course hard to sell. Cardboard collectors won't even touch a slightly worn package, and beat up or dirty ones are passed by the kids and their parents. The replacement for the BODs are the cardboard standup racks, or "shippers" where the cars are all inside square openings/shelves facing outwards. We get these every so often, and especially around the holidays. Sometimes they are large, pallet sized and each side has a different Hor Wheels product, like Monster Trucks, motorcycles, playsets, etc. Built up shadow boxes usually show up for a special run series, like holiday or birthday cars. The above only applies to Hot Wheels. I've never seen any other brand feature such containers or displays. Maybe they exist, but I've never seen any in the US. The only good thing I found about the BODs was you sometimes could find a car you were seeking because the package was torn or bent over. I've never seen a Matchbox display this large. The largest I see at Walmarts or Targets are about 1/3 that size. Usually it's the Hot Wheels that get a display this large. I see about 10 cars in this photo I'd pluck as extras ! Thanks NoirGuru for the image. That is an incredible display. You will never see a Matchbox display like that in a Walmart store here. Most of the time you are lucky to see ten to twelve pegs for Matchbox which aren't restocked that often. I've always had better luck finding Matchbox castings in Zellers stores. Superstore doesn't have many pegs for Matchbox and quite often are stocking the pegs with older product with the odd exception. Going to Walmart to look for Matchbox is a waste of time on most occasions. I see quite afew castings that I would buy. Look at it on the bright side, with a display like that you could probably pick up half of the castings issued for this year which is a hundred not counting some re-paints. That is an unbelievable sight and you have to like finding one of them. Cheers. Cobra |

fingers are crossed that some of teh larger Zellers here in the Maritimes will have a siimiliar setup. My Zeller has about 8 pegs with 2 or 3 MB castings each and it has been that way for the last 6 months |

Can we convince them to make it this instead? Then everyone will be happy and no longer complain about late batches and pegwarmers!

Great pic of that display. Reminds me of the 70's Superfast displays. |

Except for the toys' higher prices, your photo reminds me of the early 70s - plenty of matchies in stock at the end of the aisle.
