It's the Lesney Generation...comin' at ya...goin' strong...
|
Actually, the continuation of a tradition, of sorts... Lesney had a lot of Jeeps for the line back in the '70s, all starting with the yellow #72. My fave would probably be the US Mail version, but the biggest nostalgia rush would be the hot pink #3 Jeep Hot Rod. This new one's very well done! |

Too bad you never got to see me and Breah break up. I know you would've loved that. I guess you were right. I miss you. Sunstar: because AutoArt raised their prices. Again. Welly. Because Sunstar is getting greedy. | |

For trivia sake, this vehicle is only one of a very few to have kept its basic name ; althoug manufactured by many different companies. American Bantam ( AB) introduced this vehicle, but no one can actually determine when and how the name jeep began. Some assume it came from GP ( General Purpose Vehicle) AB lost the contract to the US Army because of their small manufacturing size and no doubt led to their subsequent demise. Willys-Overland and Ford then contracted with the Feds to provide these vehicles during WWII After the war, Willys became the sole civilian vehicle producer. With the merger of Willys and Kaiser in 1953, JEEP became a separate marque and to the present JEEP Corp has continued. With the acquisiion of Kaiser by AMC , JEEP had a new sponsoring parent corporation. In turn, when Chrysler took over AMC in 1987, JEEP came along. When Chrysler merged to become DaimlerChrysler, JEEP came along. When Chrysler and Daimler-Benz split, JEEP stayed with Chrysler and remains as a separate division in the Chrysler stable. Now that Cerberus, owner of Chrysler has recently surrendered ownership to FIAT ; JEEP remains strong with quite a few different models in the Division; large and small ! A commendable history! |

Hi Dave. Check out this link about Minneapolis Moline. They claim to have made the 1st one back in 1938. http://www.farmcollector.com/Farm-life/The-real-Jeep-story.aspx |

I know that the idea for the vehicle got bounced around quite a bit before the war intervened... |

Zach Very interesting info! My source "JEEP" by Jim Allen, pub 2001 by MBI does mention a 1942 M-M NTX military vehicle which served at Guadalcanal in 1943 which some called a JEEP. But Allen makes no mention on M-M competing with American Bantam, Ford and Willys-Overland for the military contract in 1940 . The name of JEEP originated as a result of WWII being declared in 1940. I wonder how M-M can claim "rights" to a vehicle in 1938, two years before war was declared ? I did see that Allen ( author) did cite a Bill Ellis "M-M expert extaordinaire" as one of his sources. But Allen seems to trace the pre-JEEP development from truck origins and not tractors! But this is an interesting bit of trivia and definitely needs more research by someone in the Midwest near the pertinent archives! Edited by DaWeber, Dec 21 2009, 08:32 PM.

Nothing Runs Like A Deere
|
Hello again Dave. Does seem odd that MM never seemed to be in the running for the bid on the Jeep contract even after they were spread out over several in the end. Here's a couple of photos i scanned onto my computer tonight. It shows a 1944 Jeep made by Minneapolis-Moline. It's from a book entitled "Illustrated History of the American Farm Tractor" by Randy Leffingwell published by Lowe & B Hould Publishers. My copy was published in 1999 and I've had it since that year or sometime in 2000. It's a super heavy pic book focusing on the origins and history of tractors in the US. This is where I first saw the MM version of the Jeep. I could only get so much of the 1st pic in my scanner, so some of the print doesn't show up. ![]() ![]() The author claims that this was in fact, the 'first' vehicle called a Jeep. Believe the book is on Amazon if you'd ever want to see the book up close Dave. Edited by craftymore, Dec 23 2009, 12:48 AM.

As for the name "Jeep", there is also another origin that claims the name was based on a character from the Popeye cartoons, Eugene the Jeep. This is the origin I've known about. It was thought that the name was adopted because like the character, the Jeep vehicle could go anywhere. Eugene, the jeep
