Sean, there was a '65 Chevelle in the RC Mints line. I was wondering...

Don't have that one or this one in hand to compare. But now that you mention it, the front and rear fascias have an Ertl American Muscle quality to them... as does the larger than normal trunk gap. :(

Kiddie Kar's had an RC Chevelle on their shelf for years now. I swear it's the same tooling...the grille's a dead giveaway...

It is the same casting. Anything "new" anymore from Johnny Lightning should be compared to Ertl and Racing Champions banks, as most new castings have been re-do's. (I said most....no need to point out the few exceptions).

Here's the Ertl American Muscle version I have an old picture of. The trunk opens as well as the hood, but as with the other Ertl cars re-done by JL, the trunk is still a separate piece, but is cast shut.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
Dean-O is quite correct as I found out trying to pry open the obviously separate piece trunk. Not a fantastic Chevelle, but for a JL at $2 or so, it's okay by me.

Look at this and then look back to the "new" casting. The JL's wing windows are a joke. *Sighs* The keep messing up all the beautiful old American Muscle castings. I could scream!

Yeah, Sean, that does look hideous. Please don't scream, though... :P

Support your local demo derby.

I saw two of these at WM a week or so ago. One of them had the grill/bumper assembly laying inside the package . . .

The older casting does look more realistic. I still can't figure out why they need to make changes that take away from a lot of the old RC casting in order to put them into the JL line. Those older castings look great. And isn't the JL line supposed to support the best quality realism...oh, excuse me...that was a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. It's probably cheaper to do the castings with the trunk sealed shut. Only logical reason I can think of for them to ruin a better casting and loose a great feature like an opening trunk...which I think would be a nice selling point. Even M2 doesn't have an opening trunk.

That's hilarious, Zach...just like old RC/Mint times!

Maybe not hilarious. Disgraceful.

I'm not a big fan of any of the new tooling and newly re-done ERTL/RC castings.
I understand the economics and the rationale for trying to go this route, but it doesn't work for me.
I guess that I am an old school died in the wool JL 1999-2008 (excluding the RC/ERTL releases) casting fan for the most part.
The frustration of not being able to find new and newer product on the pegs doesn't help either.
Let's wait six months and see where we are at in terms of JL diecast.

Cheers. Cobra

This is EXACTLY what they told me (RC2) they were NOT going to do with the Johnny Lightning line way back when they purchased the company from Tom Lowe. I remember standing there at the Toy Fair display and hearing the "promise". Well, a promise that isn't kept is ... ?

The Mint Edition cars were FAMOUS for loose windows, bumpers, mirrors and other plastic parts that just didn't fit correctly. I have found soooooo many poorly painted and fitted together newer releases it makes me sick. Wheel assemblies that are not set right in their fitting positions on the plastic bases. Bent axles. etc... I saw this Chevelle casting and just left it. There was still metal flashing left untrimmed BUT PAINTED in those side vent windows and in the rear of the driver side opera window area.
