That cab looks so Trenton, it's astounding...

I remember back when I was in my first year on my ship- 1981, we did a four or five month stretch in the yards (Norfolk Naval Shipyard- the oldest such facility on the east coast) in Portsmouth. When I went out on Liberty, I would go to the main gate, and see the taxi cabs waiting there- a company with black cars and orange dome lights- of all things, 1962 Plymouth Furys! How these managed to last almost 20 years in service as taxis amazed me to no end! And you should've seen the eyes on some of the younguns bug out when they saw the drivers operating a push button automatic.

As these same cars brought a lot of grief to Chrysler for poor sales and ugliness, here was the final vindication- the triumph of the slant six...

I wanna get these red and white Furys. Many of them.

I was going to let this one pass...even though I like the casting and can't wait for the police car version. But this pic reminds me so much of some of the older MBs I had as a kid...I really might have to snag one of these. Thanks for the pics!

In late summer 1981 I went to Wildwood, Atlantic City and Cape May. I would have made a special trip just to see those 1962 Plymouth taxi cabs that were still in service, had I known.

That summer I attended a driver's education course at my school. Part of the training was watching old films with cars of the 60s. When I was very young I remember my father had a car that looked something like that, only it was a Dart. That styling lasted only that year.

I can't even remember the name of the company. 1962 Plymouth Furys, a whole fleet of them. How many miles and engines and trannies did they go through!

The Portsmouth, Virginia, of 2009, all told, is a far different place than the decrepit, haunted, depressed, out-of-control crime ridden city it was back in 1981. It's a bit more gentrified nowadays, or so they say. They must have upgraded the fleet, by now. I'm sure those 1990 Crown Vics must be running very well.
