Today's car of the day is Summer's "2004 Mazda RX-8".

Wikipedia

The Mazda RX-8 is a sports car manufactured by Mazda Motor Corporation. It first appeared in 2001 at the North American International Auto Show. It is the successor to the RX-7 and, like its predecessors in the RX range, it is powered by a rotary engine. The RX-8 began North American sales in the 2004 model year.

You'll remember a few months ago eight people suggested we do a worst of Car Of The Day while commenting on JL's 1995 Mustang. This week we will see cars that would normally never qualify for Car Of The Day. If this proves popular I mix a few other in the normal COTD rotation. As for this Summer Mazda? The quotation marks around the car name should say it all. This model lacks a steering wheel, or pretty much any interior other than a pair of seats. Unlike Maisto, Summer hasn't bothered blacking out the windows because they at least put seats in there.

Wikipedia

Mazda introduced rotary engine vehicles in the US in 1971, beginning with the R100, followed by RX-2, RX-3, RX-4, RX-5, and finally three generations of the RX-7 sports car. With the third generation RX-7, Mazda held nothing back and delivered a super high performance sports car with little compromise. However, the lack of creature comfort and user-friendliness, coupled with the high price tag and declining interest in sports cars and coupes at this time, led Mazda to pull the RX-7 from most major markets except Japan. After 1995, Mazda suffered from a relatively undistinguished product line in the US save the MX-5 Miata. As popular interest in import tuning and performance cars resurged in the late 90's, thanks in part to various popular cultural influences such as the Sony PlayStation video game Gran Turismo, Japanese automakers waded back into the performance and sports car market in the US. In addition, Mazda endeavored to rejuvenate itself around this time, partially with financial and management assistance from Ford, and successfully developed a new product line of high quality cars with desirable styling and superior driving dynamics, beginning with the Mazda6 and followed by the Mazda3, paving way for the arrival for Mazda's next-generation rotary sports car.

While I can cause sharp stabbing sensations in hearts, I am also known to have the cure:

They offer it in a stock example also but I don't see one currently in the lineup.

My God, that is awful. After all these years you'd think Summer would get their act together and produce better quality castings but this is just as awful as what they were making 15-20 years ago.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the other contenders for worst car of the week :D

Luckily, it seems Sean can simply drive this blob right into the queue behind it and put it in its proper place.

JAMES AUTO, here's a scenario:
Men in Black knock on door. "Excuse us, but we have evidence that you have a Summer RX-8 in your son's toybox. We need to remove that item from your premises immediately."
House owner: "Why do you need it?"
Men in Black: "It was voted Worst Car of the Week and all existing pieces must be destroyed. That will raise the average quality of all other diecasts throughout the world."

"While we are here, we have a few questions. How well do you know your neighbor known as SAK?"

I did that for irony. All the cars this week were filmed in front of the stack. And oh yeah, the stack contains a pair of Hot Wheels, two Johnny Lightnings, an M2 and a Revell. Every single one of the flattened cars in the background is better than the subject matter being photographed this week. ;)

@james_autos- that thought has occurred to me as well. It really depends on which one wins to be honest.

Maybe you should do a week of just purely awful cars, and see which is the most popular (if any!).

craftymore

I 2nd the motion for an awful week of castings. :D We've yet to have one of those so far . . .

harlans toys

make that 3 of us who think its a good idea

surely the best of the worst would be a real interesting week in my opinion anyway

Celica Baby

I don't want to have a page long quote, but I agree! A week of awful would be great - though I do wonder if what one might consider awful would be another one's treasure? Still be a fun week!

be7bt

make it 5 now.

JustDavid

Okay I'll bite...now it's 6.

jedimario

Number 7 for a bad week! Then we can vote on the worst!

We could call it the Not CotW

ivantt

Thank you Just David (6) and Jedimario (7)
Mark me as #8

And then I issued this warning:

Swifty

A week of the worst? Be careful what you wish for because I can and will eventually do it. Though I think, to be fair, the week's winner should be the absolute worst car instead of the best of the worst.

And now it has become reality!

Muhahahahahahahaha!

"While we are here, we have a few questions. How well do you know your neighbor known as SAK?"
Oh, they won't talk about me. They're more inclined to call the authorities about two strangers interrogating the locals.

You know, looking at the wheels, it seems Summer is upgrading. But then, I'm sick at home with Shingles right now, and my meds are capable of creating illusions.

I have one. By AutoArt. I got it at Kiddie Kar back in either '03 or '04. Pearl white with RHD. There were color variations, if I remember. I'm thinking it would be VERY hard to find today.

I also have the RX-8 in 1:55 or so, by Realtoy. That one you might have a better chance of finding.

Maybe James in Canada can find me the Realtoy version. I have a larger one, probably 1/50 or 1/43 that I got in the supermarket and it's not bad. But I'd like a smaller version. Thanks, SAK.

Or perhaps JAMES in the UK can find you one. Realtoy are sold in many supermarkets very cheap under 'in-house' brands.

There are actually a couple Summer cars that are interesting toy models. One is an early 50s Chevy sedan in light grey. The other is the Tucker Torpedo of all things, a real American exotic.

1 store, a grocery chain carries Realtoy here and only in teh fall for the Christmas season, then discounts them over the spring and summer.

The difficulty with Realtoy here is no where on the package is what is inside the box, What you see thru teh window is all the clues you get. Got a picture of an RX-8 Mazda? or should I go by the picture posted on top of this thread.

They have it in red, blue, and yellow. And perhaps other colors as well.
