Tomorrow night, this decade comes to an end. Some of us would say, not a moment too soon, either.

What was this decade?

It was seeing an abnormal number of cars parked at the Princeton Junction train station on a beautiful, sunny, September Sunday morning. I remember it dawning on me why there were so many: their owners weren't coming home. Ever.

It was seeing our political discourse, as well as our political life, mutate into the ugly horror show that it has. Will we ever see, as a nation, how it truly frightened the rest of the world?

It was watching fear consume us- whether from terrorism, or what we perceive to be unhealthy foods, unhealthy drinking water, vaccinations, the internet, religious authority figures. We now perceive that the streets in our neighborhoods, as well as the trees and bushes and fences, hide thousands upon thousands of glazed-over, drooling pedophiles, all waiting to pounce on our children as soon as we take our eyes off of them, and woe betide any rational human being who attempts to dissuade anyone from following this utterly hysterical notion. We now fear our neighbors, who might harbor political views that differ from our own; we demonize them and comfort ourselves with bloviating entertainer-cum-commentators who speak to our fears and our bigotry and our ignorance.

We've watched our financial system come THAT close to collapsing- a monument to our totally bottomless well of narcissism and avarice.

Yep, this decade was a lulu, wasn't it?

Nevertheless, most of us are 'half-full' types. I like to think of myself as one. I could, of course, wait for Sean to break out with, "the sun'll come out tomorrow, bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow..." but I'll just say that I believe in the dawn. I believe that the 'teens will find us in better shape. Yep. Sakadoo, the eternal optimist.

I wish everyone here the happiest of New Years...that you'll all find reason to smile, and even laugh; that the girl you're oggling at the mall turns around, and gives you a wink, that you'll be walking along, and you find Andrew Jackson lying on the ground, offering you his steely gaze as you surreptitiously pick him up. I wish all of you all kinds of good luck...and much love.

Enjoy.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
Thanks, George, I appreciate what you said., even if I'm just one of those persons who has a glass a little more than half full. Mine has tequila and cola in it. In order to lick the economic woes, I use Albertson's supermarket tequila and Walmart cola. One thing that sure is looking up for 2010 is our hobby----I see nothing but really good stuff (OUCH!$$$$$$ My WALLET!!) coming out. And I certainly see a brighter year with all the great people at this website----wonderful people.

Great words, Sak. For me, this decade was the first that I really became aware of just what's going on in the world. There have been some HUGE societal drawbacks, as you mention, but there has been plenty of progress in other areas as well. Our standard of living continues to improve and we have become more and more prosperous, despite recent economic downturns. Or that's what the textbooks would have you think.

Also, this has been a decade of tremendous automotive safety advances. Traction control, ABS, stability control, multiple airbags, and countless computerized safety tricks have either been introduced or become commonplace and expected on most all cars, even used ones, this decade. America and the rest of the world is safer than it ever has been on the highway thanks to this decade.

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
That was very well put, George! I am among those looking forward to 2010. 2009 cannot end fast enough for me- has been a miserable year from start to finish.

Wishing everyone on here a happy, safe, and prosperous 2010!
