Today's Car of the Day is Realtoy's E65 BMW 7 Series. Oh dear, someone's gone and immortalized Bangle Butt in die-cast forever.

The E65/E66 was widely considered the worst of the Chris Bangle era BMWs. Maligned by odd styling and the terrible first generation of BMW's critically scrutinized iDrive system, this car took more than a fair beating from the automotive press. Nevertheless, it became the bestselling 7 Series ever over its 7 year lifespan. But the damage was done, and this car singlehandedly destroyed any reputation Bangle may have had. iDrive has been vastly improved, but 8 1/2 years later it is still recovering from the disasterous maiden voyage of the E65.

wikipedia

The E65/E66/E67/E68 model was the basis for the previous BMW 7-Series. It replaced the BMW E38 for the 2002 model year. The car was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2001, and was launched in Europe on November 17, 2001. It first appeared in the USA and other markets in the spring of 2002. E65 was the designation of the short wheel base version of the automobile, E66 of the long wheel base version, E67 of the bullet proof version and E68 of the hydrogen version.

The E65 generated much controversy, due to its radical styling and iDrive user difficulties, so customers rushed to purchase its predecessor, the E38, before it was discontinued. Nonetheless, the E65 broke records to become the best-selling 7-series iteration ever, especially after its 2006 facelift.

This really was not as bad of a car as the press would have you think. It's problems were sourced more from its class and the reputation of BMW than anything. This car failed to meet two high expectations (styling and iDrive), and for that it was tarred and feathered. Otherwise, it was every bit the top-of-the-line BMW it was expected to be. Here it is with the less criticized E60 5 Series and much loved E46 3 Series.

Support your local demo derby.

Say what you want about the 1/1 model, but the effort put forth by Real Toy is nothing short of awesome! The details and tampos exceed that of most new MB, high praise considering the great turnaround from MB in the last 3/4 years.

This might be my vote for the week. Nice week Robbie of doing COTD.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
I see nothing about it being a radical style. Maybe it was for a BMW? It looks very ordinary to me.
<--- Will anyone save Dominique before she runs out into the dark looking for help?

That was my impression also, honestly!

But Bangle, eh? :bangles: "Walk Like An Egyptian"!

The only rear end I am noticing in this thread is Dominique's. She is committing a major faux pas and leaving her stuck car in a snowstorm

When first introduced, this car was hideous. They cleaned up the styling over its lifespan...nevertheless the Realtoy version looks so much nicer than the ones sitting in the CPO line at your local BMW.

The A8 proves time and time again that it runs rings around any siebener.

I always liked the E38. Even though it was launched nearly 16 years ago, they still look nice even today. I never much cared for the styling of the E65, or the 1-Series, 6-Series and that dreadful looking X6.

I'd have an Audi any day over a BMW. Or a VW.
