Today's car of the day is Sohbi's 1989 Opel Calibra.

Wikipedia

The Opel Calibra also known as the Chevrolet Calibra in South America, the Holden Calibra in Australia and New Zealand, and the Vauxhall Calibra in the United Kingdom is a sports car engineered and produced by German automaker Opel between 1989 and 1997. The Calibra was introduced to counter the Japanese sports coupes of the late-1980s and early-1990s, and is based around the running gear of the first-generation Opel Vectra, which had been launched in 1988. Calibra production was based in the Opel factory in Ruesselsheim, Germany and the Valmet Automotive factory in Uusikaupunki, Finland[2], where production was consolidated in November 1995.

There will probably be some grumbling about this one, but it's a decent effort from Sohbi (far better than the pair of Benzes we saw for the worst of the worst week). Matchbox and Realtoy both offered racing versions of the Calibra but this is the only stock example I'm aware of. Sohbi even went to the effort of casting the correct hood ornament onto the hood!

Wikipedia

The Opel Calibra was styled by the US head of Opel design Europe, Wayne Cherry. It is a front-wheel drive coupé, but because it is based on the Vectra chassis, its ride and handling are not significantly better than that of the large family car from which it grew. On its launch in 1989, the Calibra was the most aerodynamic production car in the world. This was glorified in an advert on British television during 1990.

The eight valve model was, however, the most aerodynamically efficient Opel ever, with a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.26. It remained the most aerodynamic mass production car for the next 10 years, until the Honda Insight and Audi A2 were launched in 1999 with a Cd of 0.25. All later 16V, V6, 4x4, turbo models had a worse Cd of 0.29 due to changes in cooling system, underbody, use of spoked wheels and glass detail.

The quality's a bit iffy but the casting itself isn't actually too bad. For a start, it does actually resemble the car which it's supposed to be replicating which is more than can be said for some models. It looks a bit off from the sides but they've actually done a decent job of the front and rear.

And you're right, it is the only stock Calibra in 1:64. I have a 1:43 Gama Calibra which is nice. Gama made a lot of Opel/Vauxhall models for dealers 20 years ago. They're nicely made models, and I have quite a few of them. They all have a lot of opening parts, but they have a tendancy to chip the paint.

Very nice.... I love it, does it match up well agianst other models? Or does it come a bit smaller in comparison? Cause this is a must find for me!

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
The car seems to have pretty good basic lines. I'll accept JA's comments as good ones, so the casting must be pretty good, as well.

Matchbox had a Calibra back during the Tyco era...a racer version. I have one in orange with Opel logos, and a gold Challenge that's very nice.

It looks like a car...more like a generic car, but okay.

As stated before, the overhead shots are fairly consistently taken in the same location. Compare to other COTD pics to see how it stacks up size-wise to something in your collection.
