Today's car of the day is Mattel Disney/Pixar's 1963 Dodge Dart (Rusty Rust-eze).

Wikipedia

The Dodge Dart is an automobile built by the Dodge division of the Chrysler Corporation from 1960 to 1976 in North America, with production extended to later years in various other markets. The Dart was introduced as a lower-priced, shorter wheelbase, full-size Dodge in 1960 and 1961, became a mid-size car for 1962, and finally was a compact between 1963 and 1976. Chrysler had previously applied the "Dart" name to a Ghia-built show car in 1956.

The project planners proposed the name Dart, only to have executives demand an expensive research program which produced the name Zipp. This was promptly rejected in favor of Dart.

Surprisingly, this is our first "Cars" Car Of The Day. I've been meaning to run one for a long time but never got around to it. Rusty is the only '63 Dart in small scale and is among the more accurate vehicles in the movie/toy line (even has the Dart script on the fenders).

Wikipedia

For 1963, Dodge dropped the Lancer nameplate and applied the Dart name to Dodge's newly-designed "senior compact", a marketing term referring to the wheelbase having grown to 111 in (2819 mm) from the Lancer's 106.5 in (2,705 mm). This longer wheelbase would underpin all Darts from 1963 to 1976. The early exception was the 1963–1966 Dart station wagon, which used the Valiant's shorter 106 in (2692 mm) wheelbase. The Dart was available as a 2- or 4-door sedan, a 2-door hardtop coupe, a station wagon, and a convertible. Three trim levels were offered: the low-spec 170, the high-spec 270, and the premium GT, which was available only as a 2-door hardtop coupe or convertible. The Dart was an instant market success, with 1963 sales up sharply compared to those of the 1962 Lancer, and the Dart remained extremely popular through the end of the Dart's production run in 1976.

Initial engine offerings were two sizes of the slant-6—a 170 cu in (2.8 L), 101 hp (75 kW) version was fitted as standard equipment, and a 225 cu in (3.7 L), 145 hp (108 kW) version was available for less than $50 extra. The aluminum engine block for the 225 was discontinued early in the 1963 model year. After the start of the 1964 model year, an all-new, compact, lightweight 273 cu in (4.5 L) LA V8 producing 180 bhp (134 kW) with a 2-barrel carburetor was introduced as the top engine option. 1964 was the last year for pushbutton control of the optional Torqueflite automatic transmission, so 1963 and 1964 models were the only compact Darts so equipped.

In 1965, the 2-barrel 273 remained available, but a new Commando version of the 273 engine was released with a 4-barrel carburetor, 10.5:1 compression, a more aggressive camshaft with solid tappets, and other upgrades which increased output to 235 bhp (175 kW). At the same time, the Dodge Dart Charger was offered. The Dart Chargers were yellow Dart GT hardtops with black interiors, Commando 273 engine, premium mechanical and trim specifications, and special "Charger" badging. They were the first Dodge models to bear the "Charger" name. The following year the larger B-body Dodge Charger was introduced, and the "Charger" name was thenceforth associated with Dart models only in the "Charger 225" marketing name for the optional larger 6-cylinder engine.

Other new options for 1965 included upgraded suspension components and larger 14-inch (360 mm) wheels and tires. Factory-installed air conditioning became available after the start of the 1965 model year, as well as disc brakes, which required the 14-inch (360 mm) wheels to clear the calipers.

You can guess what I'd have to say about this one, so I'm not gonna bother writing it......

I saw one of these- a hardtop coupe- on a carrier yesterday, sitting outside of the K-mart Sean and I usually go to when he's here. In light brown metallic. Directly behind it was a 1967 Impala SS coupe, black vinyl on white. The dark gray Tahoe that was on there as well drew no attention whatsoever.

I know, James, I know. Sort of like having to swallow cough syrup that tastes like shoe polish. Take heart-he's posted worse. Much worse.

Fun times in Highland Park, folks!

Once he gets all the different brands out the way I'm sure we'll return to mostly quality die-cast.

Right Sean? Sean? ....

Thanks Swifty, I don't collect the Pixar Cars but do happen to like this one.
I also enjoyed reading your narrative on the Dodge Dart.
By featuring a casting such as this on occasion, I think is beneficial.
There are a lot of people out there you happen to collect the Pixar Car castings.
So ultimately, this one is for them.
BYW, that is a cute casting. I just might have to hunt one down so that I can saw that I own atleast one of them.
Thanks again.

Cheers. Cobra

It's unfortunate that Doc Hudson's one of the better renditions of the Hornet out there. When you've been outdone by a cartoon car...

I wouldn't mind seeing the early Mopar compacts, like this one, in someone's line. The Slant Six mated to the ultra-reliable Torque Flite made these cars indestructable- the early '70s Darts and Valiants were still a very common sight in the mid '90s. Solid transport.

Yes, I plan on adding some better models to the mix shortly but I am determined to go as many days as possible without repeating manufacturers. I should be able to hit 100 different manufacturers featured since the start of COTD sometime this week.

My Grandpa had a '75 Swinger in tan (maybe light yellow?) with either a black or dark green vinyl roof (my memory is a little hazy on that) with the Slant 6. Talk about an engine that wouldn't quit- too bad the rear fender was almost entirely rust by 1988. And yet, the car lived on- he sold it to a body shop that was going to repair the rust. On a 1975 Swinger. In 1988 or so. Talk about insane!

Speaking of his Swinger, I don't recall any Dart emblems on the car and we always referred to it as a Swinger. Has anyone ever heard of a Dodge Swinger that was not a Dodge Dart Swinger?

My daddy Tone Sr. loved Darts and the first one I remember when I was little was a '62. When I look at the photos I can see the oddball styling - similar to that of the Johnny Lightning 1962 Plymouth Fury - is striking. It is very different from that of the '63.

I read somewhere else that Dodge offered fur seat belts as an option - I am not sure of this "factoid" though. It could have been a hoax or urban legend.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
I think not all Darts were Swingers, but all Swingers were Darts. Just like the GTO taking on it's own brand, but it was still a hot Tempest based car. I believe the same thing happened to the Dodge Demon and Plymouth Duster. Was the Duster originally called the Plymouth Valiant Duster? Yes it was, I even remember the rectangular 'Valiant" badge on the front quarter panel near the door on my lime gree 1970.. Both assumed their own line and name, but were merely Valiants and Darts with a two door fastback body.
