Today's car of the day is Columbia Telecommunications Group's '05 Cadillac XLR.

Wikipedia

The XLR is a retractable hardtop convertible marketed by the Cadillac division of General Motors, assembled in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Intended to be Cadillac's flagship sports car, the XLR was based on the Chevrolet Corvette's Y platform. The XLR featured its own unique styling, interior, and suspension, and power-retractable aluminum hardtop, along with the Cadillac Northstar engine.

Cadillac introduced the XLR at the 2003 Detroit Motor Show and began production in the 2004 model year — forshadowed by the Evoq concept vehicle.

The XLR features as standard equipment heated and cooled leather seats, wood interior trim, remote keyless access, 18 inch alloy wheels, side airbags as well as a navigation, audio, and DVD system sharing a 7-inch dashboard screen. The retractable hardtop itself is constructed of aluminum (i.e.,lightweight), requires 6'-10½" of vertical clearance during retraction, and is manufactured by a supplier joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Porsche.

The engine is Cadillac's 4.6 L Northstar tuned for 320 hp (238.6 kW; 324.4 PS), mated as of the 2007 model year to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The XLR is the second roadster offered by Cadillac in recent years. The first was the Cadillac Allanté, produced from 1987 to 1993.

The XLR was nominated for the North American Car of the Year award for 2004.

Columbia Telecom was a short-lived range available at Walmart in 2005. The overall shape of the cars offered left a little to be desired and the quality wasn't quite up to Hot Wheels standards, let alone GreenLights or Johnny Lightnings of the era. After an initial range of just six vehicles this manufacturer dropped off the map entirely.

Wikipedia

The Cadillac XLR-V is the high performance version of the XLR. It is an ultra-luxury segment car, first introduced in 2005. It is the successor to the Cadillac Allanté, produced from 1987 to 1993.

Cadillac gave the public its first glimpse of the supercharged XLR-V in its Super Bowl commercial, which aired February 6, 2005. Super Bowl MVP, Deion Branch was also awarded an XLR. The car was formally introduced at the 2005 New York International Auto Show.

The XLR-V uses the same supercharged Northstar V8 as the STS-V, though output is down somewhat. For the XLR-V, the engine is certified by the SAE to produce 443 hp (330 kW) and 414 lb·ft (561 N·m). The supercharger and four intercoolers are built into the intake manifold. A six-speed automatic transmission, larger brakes from the Z51 Corvette, and 19-inch wheels will also be used.

The XLR-V can accelerate to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds according to Car and Driver's tests. The magazine also timed it at 11.3 seconds to 100 mph (160 km/h) and recorded a 13.0 second quarter mile at 110 mph (177 km/h). Its top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (249 km/h).

The XLR-V went on sale in the United States in early 2006 with a base price of $98,000. Pricing for the 2008 model started at $101,300; making it at the time, one of General Motors' most expensive vehicles.

I've seen pictures of these models before, and they seem a bit too 'angular', if you know what I mean.

However, it's still much better than some of the other cars shown this week.

What an angle on the windshield! :o

Looks like the driver's head would be higher than the windshield.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
Well, that certainly answers a few long standing questions.....I bought a few of this range, and they came in a plastic case with clear cover, I thought this Caddy was the most fun looking of them all, and since I assumed it was a "concept" car, I didn't worry too much about its shape, They did a Corvette, and it must be the most putrid Corvette I've ever seen in diecast. I think I bought one on clearance just for a copy of a terrible diecast.

So much for licensing agreements "to be sure the product lives up to our corporate standards." Obviously GM didn't even look at these castings, but they got their licensing fees.

They did a Tahoe or Yukon which actually didn't look bad, but all the rear windows were merely indented on the casting, and painted black to simulate glass.

I think I have this Caddie as well as the Tahoe/Yukon in blue. The wheels looked good as I remember.

This line was complete, utter dreck; a total waste of resources and creative (?) expenditures. As they say in Merseyside: roobish.

I can assure you that it'd be a lot worse than that.

What prompted this company to get involved with diecast cars anyway? That's like the Monsanto Corporation opening a chain of Belgian waffle stands.

In my opinion, The CTS was their bet casting. The Chrysler 300 sdan lacked some correct detail. But I cannot criticize their rendition of the Cadillac! CBS previously was involved with diecast - in which they were reported to have acquired Hubley , at least in part! Another firm was Ideal Toy Company.
I tried to inquire from Columbia as to the connection with CBS etc, but was shut out at the time on numerous phone calls to their HQ in Long Island! I finally gave up! I do recall the website indicated more models were planned ; but they never appeared!

DaWEBER----Oh, yeah!!!! I remember the 300C and was glad to get one, and then once I got it home and saw the proportions, I said to myself, "Rooobish." At least it had a salvageable clear case.
The 300C still wasn' t as bad as the Corvette.

A lot of money for a clear case.
