The Tomy Kogyo Company reportedly first issued models of small scale Japanese vehicles in 1970. The name subsequently changed to Tomica and recently is now identified as Takara Tomy. The first models were mainly produced in Japan, but a few were also issued from Hong Kong. These latter ones are now very difficult to find. About four years later, the famous " Pocket Cars" Series began. The models were issued to the European and North American markets . These featured metal baseplates and many had hinged doors. This series was issued in the US until the late 1980s . The last blisterpacks identified a production/ copyright year of 1986. In 1976, the "Tomica Long" series of larger commercial vehicles was added. Also during the 1980s, Tomy partnered with Matchbox for a short while to produce "Road Blasters" for the Japanese market. The most recently introduced new additions consist of the "Limited" and "Vintage" Series in which the models offered are upgraded and more enhanced in detail. Although not readily available in the larger toy and distribution stores in the US, these models are presently available from a few select dealers in the US and Asia.

Some very nice cars. I don't have pics of all of mine yet. I currently have about 16 tomicas at present...all police, fire, and rescue. Of course, I have a few others picked out to order from overseas just as soon as i am able. Those limiteds are not cheap! |

Love these three in particular! I've never seen the rally version of the Honda before and I'm going to have to track one down- likewise need to track down the blue Celica and the two tone Caddy! Wouldn't mind finding one of the Cervos either, now that I think of it. Amazing selection of cars there- thanks for the pics!

The blue Celica was from a multi-pack, although I can't remember if it was a four-pack or a big 20 pack. The rally Civic is a Japan casting, and I couldn't ever find a red one, so I 'settled' on the rally edition which seemed easier to find at the time, although later on, I found the red one and love having both. As for the pic selection, they came together as the only pics I had left in Photobucket of castings not already shown in the outstanding shows above mine. Dean |

I haven't found the red Civic either, though I would imagine it is much more common than the rally (up until now it was the only version I was even aware of). It's hard to not like Tomica. Unique castings (no one else has come close to covering the JDM like they have) of cars that are well-known worldwide. Opening features and working suspensions- long after other mainstream brands like Matchbox eliminated both features. And it seems like they still have most of their old tooling bank, as re-issues keep popping up in the Limited line- something that most other diecast companies can't claim. |

I like the Civic as well...the red version shows up on the 'bay and always goes for a pretty penny. |
