Today's car of the day is Majorette's 1992 Renault Twingo.

wikipedia

The Renault Twingo is a city car built by French automaker Renault, first presented at the Paris Motor Show in September 1992 and sold in continental European markets beginning in 1993. The second generation Twingo was launched in Summer 2007.

The "Twingo" name is a portmanteau derived from the words "Twist", "Swing" and "Tango".

I saved the best for last. This cast has always been my most favorite out of every line, every brand and variation. This tiny car has been part of my Majorette collection for as long as I can remember.

I'm still looking for a replacement to this one. Whether it be the same colour, or a variation. I need my Twingos. They make me happy!

There is an undercarriage picture because I've never noticed any other model with a specialty font for the model! Notice the font used on Renault and Twingo. I know there are some other casts that used a different font, but I've never known?

Wikipedia

Generation I (1992-2007)

The Twingo was designed under Patrick le Quément, Renault's chief designer. Le Quément's belief was that it was a greater risk for Renault to take no risks at all, having seen its market share suffer from cars such as the Renault 9 and 11. The design of the Twingo resembles that of the 1982 Polish prototype Beskid, from which its monobox silhouette is claimed to be derived.

The Twingo featured revolutionary features (at the time of launch) of a centrally-mounted instrument panel, consisting of a speedometer, fuel gauge and clock, with the odometer and trip recorder selected by pushing a button on the end of the steering column stalk. This left just a strip of warning lights in the area behind the steering wheel. It also had a sliding rear seat, which could be moved to either increase boot space or rear seat legroom. The boot parcel shelf was also unusual in that it was attached to the inside of the tailgate, and lifted up with the tailgate. It could also be clipped back against the rear window when not required.

All the first-generation Twingos were equipped with straight-4 petrol engines. Initially available with an 8-valve 1.2-litre 55 hp (41 kW) engine, it was replaced with an 8-valve 1.15-litre 60 hp (45 kW) unit. A 16-valve 75 hp (56 kW) version was added in 2000.

Many parts (e.g. the JB1 gearbox, brakes, engine) are shared with other vehicles across the Renault range.

Support your local demo derby.

Heard a '75 AMC Pacer called. He wants his headlights returned to him. :P

They could never market this car here like that. Twingo? Who wants to drive a Twingo? Sounds like a wimpy clown

Well, I like it. Probably because I like the AMC Pacer and it strongly reminds me of it! But bear in mind the Pacer was a well-liked in France (it never sold well but was always regarded highly, and Renault did own AMC until 1987).

Had Renault kept their AMC investment they could have marketed it here as the Pacer.

I've always loved this car. It probably goes back to holidays in France when I was little; there were Twingos everywhere unlike in the UK where Renault never marketed the Twingo, so when I went to France I always looked forward to seeing them.

Naturally, I bought the Majorette model as soon as I saw it, and it was in this colour with an open roof. It was also produced in many other colours and with a closed roof which I don't like as much.

I like it. Wouldn't mind having one!

Jermaine's offerings this week have one common theme: I've never seen many of them on the pegs here. They stuck us with Gallic oddball ideas like hoods propped open by tiny plastic rods.

Oh sure they did. If memory serves me correctly you get your pick of small poorly designed and poorly safely made cars ( hoping the Renault was built safe ). Lets see you have the Geo Metro, Ford Fiesta, Chevy Vega, Chevy Aveo ( ok that was a safer car but still small ) for starters.

But I like this little blue version :)

I once drove a Chevy Aveo. That they could market something like this is unconscionable.

Twingo sounds like Wingo. As in a commentator on ESPN, or even better, as in Hawthorne Wingo, this hapless guy the New York Knicks had coming off the bench back in the early '70s, in the late fourth quarter. Everyone in Madison Square Garden knew he was coming into the game, so the cheer rose up, "Win-go! Win-go!" Was great for laughs, especially when they were needed, like, when the Knickerbockers were down by 20 points to Boston.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
Jermaine, my SWAG says that the base font for "Twingo" was a request by Renault as part of the use agreement by Majorette. If the casting was made around the time of the real car, then it may have been part of a dealer introduction promo, such as handing out the diecast to guests, etc. So they wanted the "Logotype" on the diecast as it was on the car and promo literature.

If Swifty or Sak say I'm right, they owe me coffee.

"Monobox silhouette," I love that, Jermaine! I've been looking for a term to describe the numerois cars that look all look like boxes with hoods on 4 wheels.

"The Twingo was designed under Patrick le Quément, Renault's chief designer"
DESIGNED??? I don't think there is a person on this site who couldn't "design" a car just like this with a pen and the back of a napkin in about 30 seconds. Maybe we should have a contest----winner gets a casting of a VW Rabbit, Chevette, or Yugo.

The sole Yugo casting available would actually be a real prize, as Sean can attest...

Took me forever to find one, and the one I have has a bent axle due to poor shipping. Not from a member here so no worries!
