Today's car of the day is Majorette's 1980 Renault 5 Turbo.

Wikipedia

The Renault 5 Turbo or R5 Turbo is a high-performance hatchback automobile that was produced by the French manufacturer Renault in the early 1980s. The car was designed for rallying, but was also sold in road-going guise.

This car was recently acquired in a local trade with my roommate's co-worker. He mostly collected Hot Wheels, so this one was an easy win in my collection.

I just can't bear the glass and the orange accents... But we'll see what I can do with it later.

Wikipedia

Although the standard Renault 5 has a front-mounted engine, the 5 Turbo featured a mid-mounted 1397 cc Cléon turbocharged engine placed behind the driver in mid-body in a modified Renault 5 chassis. In standard form, the engine developed 160 PS (118 kW; 158 hp). Though it used a modified body from a standard Renault 5, and was badged a Renault 5, the mechanics were radically different.

The first 400 production 5 Turbos were made to comply with Group 4 homologation. A second version, named Turbo 2, was introduced using stock Renault 5 parts replacing many of light alloy components in the original 5 Turbo version. The original 5 Turbo was in retrospect called "Turbo 1". The Turbo 2 was less expensive, but had nearly the same levels of performance.

All the racing derivatives were based on the Turbo 1. The factory pushed the engine output up to 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) for the Critérium des Cévennes, 210 PS (154 kW; 207 hp) for the Tour de Corse, and possibly as much as 350 PS (257 kW; 345 hp) in the Maxi 5 Turbo. These kits featured stronger engine internals and more efficient intercoolers.

Driven by Jean Ragnotti the R5 Turbo won the Monte Carlo Rally on its first outing in the World Rally Championship. The 2WD R5 turbo soon faced the competition of new Group B four-wheel drive cars that proved faster on dirt. However, it remained among the fastest of its era on tarmac where it was highly successful.

In 2004, Sports Car International named the R5 Turbo number nine on the list of Top Sports Cars of the 1980s.

Ah, the car that started it all. No one would like Civics or Golfs if it wasn't for this thing

A very iconic car. Back in the day it was extremely quick, and even now compared to today's hot hatches it's probably just as fast.

Corgi also produced this one at around the same time but the Majorette is way better, naturrellement!

Norev also made one a few years ago which I think I ran as car of the day some time ago.

There's one for sale, in gray, at Lotus of Hopewell, here in New Jersey. It has French registration. The car's fame is virtually unknown here...the person who'd buy it would naturally be an enthusiast of sorts...or an expatriate Francais. Or both.

Parts would be prohibitively expensive, of course.

Jedimario, this car didn't make me like Civics or Golfs. I have never seen this car configured this way, or this diecast for that matter. Another "monobox" added to the list of many.

Support your local demo derby.

The overall proportions appear very AMC Pacer like. Nice model of a 1/1 car I doubt i've ever seen before in person.

The body lines remind me of the 1988 MG Metro. (with bolt on additions)

That's because the Renault 5 Turbo was also used in rallying. All rally cars must be based on standard road legal cars (with all the extra kit added on of course), but sometimes the manufacturers made rally cars back into road legal cars like the Renault 5 Turbo, Lancia Delta Integrale, Ford Focus RS and Subaru Impreza 22B. They have featured like flared wheel arches, spoilers, big alloys and of course more power.

Homolofation specials are the best. Ford RS2000, please.

It started the whole "hot hatch" thing, Ivan.

Well, I liked the Civic because I thought it was a well built, economical and lasting little device, and the other "monobox hatchbacks" really didn't interest me.
Are you sure this 1980 MG Metro started it all??
Weren't cars like this done by makers like Simca and Fiat way back in the sixties and the seventies??

The first generation Rabbit/Golf (stupid name for a car- they should have stuck with Rabbit if you ask me!) GTi started the hot hatch trend.

No, the Renault did :p It was first, and it was popular.

Rob, I think the MK1 Golf GTi did start the 'hot hatch' craze. It was launced in Europe 4 years before the Renault 5 Turbo in 1976.

I'd put them in different classes though because the 5 was based on a rally car, and the Golf wasn't. The Renault 5 Alpine was more similar to the Golf, and although it was released just before the Golf, it never became as popular or as iconic as the Golf: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renault_5_Alpine

Judging by the Renaults I've seen over here- the nightmarish Dauphine, the 8, and 16, I can't help but think the Golf I (Wabbit) must've been a better buy. I mean, the aforementioned were the reason people never took De Gaulle seriously...
