VIPER variation; You really got to watch for things

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
I collect Vipers and knew I already had the "green" one from release 4 of the 40 Years series.
"THE" green one??? Yesterday I saw both of these at WM on the pegs, next to each other, and I knew I must be missing at least one---took a chance and thought mine had no stripes, and I was right when I got home.
BUT, you have to be very sharp to notice and remember all of this, and if they weren't right next to each other, I would have never even known there were two different green versions.
I'm not really a variations collector, but I like different color schemes and changes. I can see why a variations collector must go crazy looking for all the smaller and subtle differences.

 I didn't realize that either! Nice way of dealing with what has become a bit of a pegwarmer casting.

Congratulations on your find.

I think that this variation thing has become ridiculous.
It's time to stop the insanity.
There is a red coloured version of the 1992 GMC Typhoon that comes with TWO DIFFERENT kinds of wheels and WITH or WITHOUT roof-racks. That is FOUR variations of one casting.
You can't even find the castings at any local retail store since who knows when; yet LCB is now resorting to this kind of crap.
This is just another way to alienate what few customers and collectors that may still want to collect JL castings.

Greenlight is looking better everyday in everyway.
Another diecast company is getting more of my diecast money, and they don't make JL castings.

Cheers. Cobra

I don't know. I love the variations. You could say that it gives us more options. The insanity is with those of us that have to have all of the variations, like I do. I don't usually find them, but I wish I could. As for the Viper, I would call that an error unless several came off the line that way.

The Viper comes in two standard variations:
- with silver coloured stripes.
- without stripes.
So neither version is an error but just a split in production obviously geared to try to generate more sales.

I hadn't paid attention and didn't know that there were variations.

Variations are a good way for manufacturers to increase production quantities to get better pricing. If you are the kind of person who has to have it all, well, that's your bed and you have to sleep in it. I don't know what exactly is the typical JL collector but I get the feeling that they are not the type that collects every variation of every model.

For those who are more selective, knowing that there are variations of their favorite models makes the hunt fun and interesting. Hopefully, it doesn't become frustrating.

As of last night there are 9 JLs (aside from the newly stocked Walmart exclusive release) in my local Walmart.

All of them are of this casting in three different color schemes.

Interesting that they (JL) would vary the two releases by tampo and not color. I agree that it is just to get the collectors to buy the same car multiple times.

Actually, the same colour with variations come from the same release.
If the Viper casting is a different colour, it is from a different release.
Since the 40 Years JL releases and the Forever JL releases came out; there have been atleast two variations of a lot of the regular release castings excluding chase versions which usually is a wheel variation.
I know it's about trying to generate sales but if you can't even find the castings in the store, what difference does it really make if the company makes umpteen variations of a particular casting in a particular release. I don't think that all JL collectors are like HW colectors and WANT all the variations.
I prefere to pick and choose the castings and particular variations that I want WHEN I can actually find the castings in a store which just hasn't happened for a very long time.
If you can't find one brand of diecast, eventually a person may start buying other QUALITY diecast from a different manufacturer. Hello Greenlight.

Cheers. Cobra
