Today's car of the day is Matchbox's 1986 Saab 9000.

Wikipedia

The 9000, Saab's first executive car, was released in 1985. It was replaced by the Saab 9-5 in the fall of 1997 for the 1998 model year.

The 9000 was based on the Type Four chassis, a platform shared with the Fiat Croma, Lancia Thema and Alfa Romeo 164. The Croma and Thema are outwardly similar to the 9000 while the 164 shares only the chassis. Much of the bodywork was interchangeable between the 9000, Croma and Thema; for example, the doors of the Croma fit directly onto the 9000, but are lighter due to less side impact protection. The 9000's body was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and Björn Envall.

Despite being shorter overall than the 900, the 9000 had a longer wheelbase and a great deal of interior space, and was classified as a "Large Car" by the EPA. Unlike the 900, the 9000 kept the ignition switch in the more conventional steering column position rather than between the front seats.

Standard '80s Matchbox- the regular release comes in the same burgandy that adorned so many Universal-era Matchbox cars. Opening doors are always a plus, as is any small scale Saab.

Wikipedia

The 9000 was launched in 1985 as a 5-door hatchback only, powered by a watercooled, turbocharged DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine, providing 175 hp (130 kW).[1] Earlier both the PRV engine and the Ford SHO V6 engine was considered.[2] Both a 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission were available. In 1986, a normally aspirated engine was introduced in the 9000 and 9000 S models, producing 130 hp (97 kW). A four door sedan with a conventional trunk, the CD, arrived in 1988, and was available only with the turbocharged engine in the US market.

All 9000s were equipped with an electronic display unit (EDU) which displayed fuel consumption, distance to an empty fuel tank, alternator output voltage, outside temperature, and lowest battery voltage during vehicle start. If the outside temperature fell to 26 ℉ (−3.3 ℃) to 38 ℉ (3.3 ℃), the temperature display is automatically selected to warn of possible "black ice" road conditions. A separate pictogram monitored door and hatch opening and exterior light bulb condition.

Saab Direct Ignition was fitted to the 9000 CD in 1988 and expanded to all turbocharged 9000s in 1989. In 1990, the 9000 was equipped with the larger B234 2.3L engine, providing 150 hp (110 kW) in the normally aspirated engine and 200 hp (150 kW) in the 9000 Turbo.

The limited edition 9000 CD Griffin was available for the 1992 model year only, and was highly appointed with luxury features including all available electric options, special eucalyptus green paint, a separate rear-seat air conditioning system, walnut trim and rear window blinds. In the United Kingdom, a limited run of 9000 Carlsson models was produced, with a paint-matched Airflow body kit, spoiler, and specially tuned turbocharged engine producing 220 hp (160 kW) with a manual transmission or 200 hp (150 kW) with an automatic. A number of Carlsson's with Saab's B202 turbo-charged engine were also sold into the Australian market. It it not known if any Carlsson's with the B234 engine were actually sold in Australia.

Nice casting, and one of only a handful of Saabs produced in small scale. And half of those are concept cars!

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
This looks like a nice casting, (opening doors! :) ) but like the real car, I'd pass right by it and not know what it was or bother to look twice. I see a Volvo about once a week out here, but a SAAB?? I saw one in the Home Depot parking lot last week, and that was the first SAAB I've seen since maybe mid 2009, or, ALL of 2009. I guess that was a long drive from where SAK lives to come to see if my Home Depot had what they needed!!

Of course the MB people back then just HAD to put something ORANGE or YELLOW inside to scorch the buyer's eyes. Paint the interior black, paint the exterior details, clean up the wheels, and it would make a great custom project and turn into an impressive display piece. If like James Auto says, that there are few SAAB's in diecast, then fixing this one up would do it justice. Are these easily found in boot and yard sales?

Boy, I'd like this blue one! The red metallic version's by far the most common. I wonder if this one was part of that 1989 UK Christmas set with the yellow Sterling and green Vectra? I know there was a third model.

I saw one of these, in marvelous condition, behind the Main Street eatery in Kingston, which is a couple of miles up Route 27 from Princeton. It was in black. You notice, because there aren't many of these anymore. I've heard negative things about its build quality.

I haven't found any yet but now that I know you want one I'll probably be able to find one easier.

I have the more common red version. I don't really think it suits the model very well, and I think the same about the blue version too.

I'm a sucker for the late-'80s Matchbox castings. Such a classic!

I currently have one of these on the table as car #121, just waiting for some inspiration for a paint scheme.

Burgandy and white with rally graphics are the only other two colors I know of for this casting. Horribly under-used tooling! :(

At first glance this looks like a repaint of the burgandy-maroon car. This is a great casting.
