Casting Detail

Both have some great details, MB has a shovel and an axe cast into the metal under the drivers side. Also MB has a spare tire on the back and a jerry can cast into the metal. JL cast the gas filler cap into the side and has a much better grill. The opening hood on the Johnny goes a long way too. Both have windshield wipers in the details, MB has them cast in to the plastic of the windscreen. JL into the frame around teh windscreen. JL's windscreen fold down. No scales are specified, but the JL is slightly bigger in both dimensions, although they are definately different years and modesl, JL being a CJ-5 and MB deing a Willys.

Tires/Rims

I like the tires and the rim detail on the MB better. I know Johnny can do better, they have many great tires and rim combos in the repartoire.

Tampos

JL more realistic tampo's look better but MB's constant attempt at getting a generic tampo to look good is appreciated

Paint

Both done up in Army green, quality wise they are the same IMHO

Interior

MB has a real disappointing steering wheel, just a blob of plastic, no dash and very little detail on teh seats. JL has a detailed dash, great looking gear shifts, and seats taht look comfortable enough to sit on.

Chassis

Both have plastic bases, previous versions of the JL had Metal The detail on the JL is slightly better

Price
Johnny $2.92 Matchbox $1.29

Once again JL makes a much better casting but the price differential makes the MB an appealing casting and a great addition in any diecast collectors garage. They look good sitting togther, I recommend both.

Two military Jeeps? All you need now is a black GMC van with a red stripe on the side for them to chase after. ;)

The wheels are the main letdown for both of these models. Both look far too new to be on vintage Jeeps, but at least JL disguised this fact by keeping the rims black.

Got one to spare? I would love to have an A-team Van.

Can't wait for the movie to come out. I hope it is better then Miami Vice, Starsky and Hutch, and the Dukes movies though I was disappointed in all of those.

I loved the Starsky & Hutch movie. The Dukes movie would have been a good movie (not a great movie) if it hadn't been a Dukes Of Hazzard movie. As a Dukes movie it was horrible! I haven't seen the Miami Vice movie yet. I hope the A-Team movie is good, also. I have high expectations!

I'm also hoping that we'll see the return of the Ertl casting when the movie premieres. ;)

Support your local demo derby.

Agree w/James on the interior part, the JL is a notch better. Simple wheel swaps would help both tremendously. Good review James.

Amazing jeeps.

Talking abouth the A-Team, i hope this new movie to be fun and in the spirit for those die hard fans (me included) I have one metal van made here in colombia back in 1986 (when the series was the top rated tv show here).

Big not too detailed but black and fun.

100% colombian made by a now difunct local company (of course no permit from Universal Pics) and is one of my beloved collection treasures.

I hope to find the ERTL someday.

And those jeeps of course

Really cool A-Team van! I've never seen that one before!

With luck, the old Ertl casting will make a reappearance with the debut of the new movie.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
SWIFTY, the first run of the MB casting had OD wheel rims, which is more correct than either of the two pictured here. Why they switched to white rims beats me..
Since JL has put their Jeep in the F64 mainline, I have snatched each color version at $2 or less.
I agree with JA's assessment that both castings are good for their respective prices.

The MB LOOKS like a WWII Jeep, something we normally don't see----most castings are of later civilian Jeeps made up in military markings. The JL CJ resembles the post Korean war era Jeep (M38 A1) and has the higher rounded hood. There must not have been any veterans that designed the JL casting----you don't drive a military Jeep without a spare tire!! (Well, I wouldn't drive ANY vehicle without a spare!)
No one seems to make the M151A Jeep of the Vietnam era in 1/64, which looks quite different in details and was shared with the Ford Bronco platform. Because there is no equivalent looking civilian product of that vehicle, a casting of such would have limited revamp possibilities.

The latest MB revamp is out, a khaki color with some strange tampos, something more you'd expect to see on those dollar store castings.
