Today's car of the day is Tomica's 1988 Range-Rover.

The Range Rover is a four-wheel drive luxury sport utility vehicle (SUV) produced by Land Rover in the United Kingdom, owned by the India-based Tata Motors. It was first introduced in 1970 and is still in production today. There have so far been three major generations. The original model was known simply as the Range Rover until almost the end of its life, when Land Rover introduced the name Range Rover Classic to distinguish it from its successors.[1]
The first-generation Range Rover, the Range Rover Classic was produced between 1970 and 1996. Originally, the Range Rover was fitted with a detuned 135 hp (101 kW) version of the Buick-derived Rover V8 engine. The 3.5 litre (3528 cc) engine was bored out to a displacement of 3.9 litres (3947 cc) for the 1990 model year, and 4.3 litre (4275 cc) in 1992 (1993 model year) for the Long Wheelbase type. One of the first significant changes came in 1981, with the introduction of a four-door body. Shortly after they introduced twin thermo fan technology to reduce the significant overheating problems the '70s models experienced in Australia. Sometime in the '80s they introduced the "Range Rover Vogue" which had significantly more luxury(First Vogue model introduced in February 1981 as the 2 door limited edition Vogue Estate.

Only Hotwheels and Tomica produced 5-dr versions of the original Range-Rover whereas Corgi, Matchbox and Siku produced 3-dr versions. The idea behind the Range-Rover was to create a luxury version of the Land-Rover because back then, Land-Rovers were far from luxury. They were superb off-road but like Land-Rovers they weren't the most reliable of cars. Now of course, there's not really a lot of difference in the two marques other than than the price.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
Most fairly decent castings, even some dollar or less variety, can be improved immensely by switching to better wheels and LOWERING the stance to a more realistic height.

Support your local demo derby.

:redneck: Think the redneck in me wants to see this upper crust suv lifted up and fitted with some proper Super Swampers! Anyone pick up on the theme for this week? Surprised someone hasn't mentioned it yet. :rolls:

*Note to the owner of the Garage, just now noticed there are ZERO emoticons of a proper suv lifted and stacked with some heavy duty tread.*

And to be fair, most emoticars can still be referenced here: http://home.comcast.net/~toyotasupra/

I've done a lot more since but never updated the site due to lack of use.

@ Zach - the redneck icon is awesome!! I sat here laughing out loud.

This is a great casting precisely because it's plain. The HW version is okay, I think I have it in white, but the wheels are such a let-down.

I made that one personally! The original started out as the AIM "grinning smiley" or ":-D" and then I just blacked out a few teeth. :redneck: It's in the clickable emoticons, just click 'show all'.
