At first it may seem blasemous (sp?) to compare the lowly Hotwheels to detail leader Johnny Lightning but patience my friends as they are closer then you think First the combatants teh 1970 JL Maverick and the 1971 Hotwheels Maverick. Casting Detail Johnny has the windshield wiper detail cast in to the body below the window, HW in teh plastic windscreen, Door handles, HW went 1 step further and cast and tampo'd in teh door locks, JL was satisfied with just the door handles.Johnny did up a fab rear end on this Mav including the steers head on the gas cap , HW you have to satisfied with just black plastic, of coarse you could add the details with some paint and a toothpick. Front end details JL is ahead again and there is that Steers head right in the middle of the blacked out grill. Also Johnny has that lovely silver paint around the doors and windshield wipers. But the wind foil on the trunk of the HW is a nice addition. As is the chromed under the bumper front wind foil. One more item to seal the deal here is JL's opening hood and 2 color motor details. Johnny has to win this catagory but kudos to HW for making it close. Tires/Rims Well Johnny has real style tires and chrome Mags, you have to make due with those all too familiar BW wheels on the HW's. I don't mind teh Basic HW Wheel, it all the other weird stuff that comes on HW's all the time that bothers me. Johnny wins this category because nothing can beat real rider tires. Tampos I like the pin striping on the HW a little better and kudos to HW for adding "GRABBER", not sure if there was a Grabber in 1970. Hot Wheels wins this category but it is just my opinion, There is really nothing wrong with JL's tampo's up version either. Call it a tie Paint HW's jazzed this up a bit with that metal flake they so often add to the paint. I love the metal flake paint. How it sparkles and shimmers. But the brigh bright yellow on this issue of the JL just kinda pops. Another tie. Interior There is all kinds of detail inside the Johnny. And surprisingly enough there is all kinds opf detail inside the HW. Including some speaker details on the back window shelf, That is just enough to push this category into HW's favour. Looking forward to further issues from HW in a different interior color. Chassis Chrome plastic vrs metal, no contest, but also a thing of the past it seems for Johnny, I give this category to Johnny, but it will be interesting to compare the HW to a new $2.92 Forever 64 Maverick if there is every one. The verdict may be different Price $4.92 vrs $1.28 hey its like comparing Macintosh apples to Crab Apples, It is all your your taste buds. And I like a good crab apple every once and awhile. And considering you can buy the HW Maverick and still have some coin to get the new Fairlane and Shelby, All in all you can't make a silk purse out of sow's ear, but damn Hot wheels tried their hardest. If you collect puddle jumpers, or FORD's or 70's cars. HW Maverick is one you just gotta find and add to your diecast garage. Great effort from the blue side of Mattel. I am impressed. ![]() ![]()

They're both really good castings. The JL wins the tampo round, in my opinion anyway, because the Hot Wheels lacks headlight, gascap, and taillight details. |

I like the paint much better on the HWs than the JL. The Johnny lacks any zip in that department. The JL does have the B-Pillars cast where the HWs just has the glass and no casted pillars. For a dollar though the HWs is very good. Nice comparison James. Too bad we'll never see the Mav in the JL line any time soon. |

1970![]() It had pillars so technically would you call this a two door sedan? I'm unsure. |

Or were those chrome strips that went up and down with the windows. It doesn't look like it was part of the body, just a trim piece. On another note those rims are fab. |

Good point James. I'm not really familiar with Mavs to start with so hopefully someone else can verify. The rims look identical to ones used by JL. |

They would be considered sedans. And the rear window was more of a vent type. My Uncle had two, one like the photo you posted. I had one four door sedan. |

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!

A very good review and I love reading this sort of stuff because for years I did reviews on plastic model kits. Very nice, James, a good deal of work and comparison. |
