HW Plymouth Superbird, GL Dodge Daytona and JL Dodge Daytona, lets look at some details![]() ![]() ![]() Casting Detail Great details, windshield wipers, hood pins, window trim, tail lights, badging, just great details all over the JL and GL casting. HW's casting is frought with issues, a tooling line across the trunk, a bit of slag on the hood, deep scratches along the drivers side, The HW looks great from a distance but the closer you get the more its flaws show up. The GL looks sort of Jada ish, but as they say, GL is perfect 1/64. Under the hood on the GL is a motor with a chrome air filter. Johnnies engine bay while having no chrome has a black air filter and more detail etched into the engine and fenders. Johnny by a heartbeat. Tires/Rims Johnnies red line real rider tires are exquisite, I love them, GL's white lettered GoodYears are very very nice also. HW's version of teh mag are just that a dollar version no contest from Mattel, and a tie between the GL and JL Tampos Nice details on teh JL and GL, Daytona badges, gas caps, rea end details, side indicator lights, GL throws on a license plate, HW with no rear end details, and indicator lights cast in but not colored. Gonna have to give the big players another tie. Paint It is hard to say. Johnnies gold or GL's Orange, all I know is HW's paint while an interesting colour, is poorly applied, has bubbles and runs, and missing areas, but I do likethat green color and would like to see again some day. Greenlights paint is flawless on this issue, but Johnny come real real close. Interior All kinds of details inside the black interiored GL casting, but the details are so so much clearer on the white interiored Johnny, and with the black dash offsetting the white seats, Johnny's interior just sparkles. HW while having some nice seat detail offers a bland dash and steering wheel. Johnny come out ahead here just because of teh 2 color interior. Chassis Both lots of nice detail on the GL and the JL, makes the plastic sans detail base on the HW just bland and detailless, Price Johnny $4.92, Greenlight $4.92 HW $1.28 again we are comparing a premier diecast to a dollar diecast. No contest on the winner, but for a little over a dollar, this is just another great casting from HW despite its shortcomings which are numerous SO the winner is Johnny by a slim margin, You may have an alternate opinion, But IMHO JL did up there Daytona right nice. GreenLight all the way. Accurate, true scale, nicely detailed.

Knock, knock. Who's there? M2! They say they'd like to be included in the manner. I've got one of these somewhere, but I stole the pic from M2.![]() Of the 3 you've got James, the GL is far and away better. It's true 1/64 while JL and HWs are smaller. Add in the M2 to the mix, and the competition might be tighter. |

GreenLight vs M2 would make for a much harder comparison. Suffice it to say buying both is easier than trying to pick a favorite.

Look under the hood, the Johnny beats the GL hand down. I also like teh crisper side vents on the doors on the JL, I dislike the large crack between the nose and the fenders on teh GL, and while I dislike the huge hood pin rings on the Johnny, they are unfortunately a true hood pin on these beasts. I remember them from my childhood, on the one or 2 of these I have ever seen. JL's gas cap also has some extra detail and actually looks like it might even open. GL's is just a blob of paint. I wish I had one of those M2's to comapre these too. The opening doors give the M2 an advantage right away. |

You know, it's funny. Zach's pics make me want to go out and buy these cars....even though I already have both! The M2 is approximately 1/61 and the GreenLight should be true 1/64 scale. Hence why both are so much larger than the JL example. |

Would like to see the Ertl (RC?) casting reviewed against them. I always liked that casting. Nice report. I like the GL with the exception of the motor which looks like a motorcycle engine sitting in the engine compartment. |

The only one of the bunch with an opening trunk! If I can find mine I will get a picture as soon as I get my computer back (should be in the next week or so) and a camera (I really need to find one of those in a hurry!). |

Go get 'em, Swifty!! Life's too short not to have an extra supply of winged Mopars!!! Very interesting review, but I do think the M2 belongs in there. I do realize that James had no access to the M2. The more I look at these photos, the more I may have to scrutinize both GL and M2 copies I have. The M2 is starting to look better in some areas... I buy every different winged Mopar I can find. Since I keep them separated from all my other cars, I may have to set them all out together for a family portrait, then I'll know what I'm missing after people look at them!

Its kind of funny. I don't collect multiple castings of the same car. I am not really a Mopar fan. Yet I have more winged Daytonas and Superbirds than anything else including just about every JL version. I think my favorite of the bunch is the JL Nascar Legends versions. |

Not strange at all, I'm another Ford fan who has a love of all things Wing Car. If I see one I don't have on the pegs there's no hesitation- it just goes home with me! |

This is an interesting review to read. I have the Black Bandit version from Greenlight. I suspect that the casting is made in a multi-piece die set; thus the explanation for the large gap on the nose section. The Greenlight casting #030 is used for both the 1968-1970 Dodge Charger and the 1969 Dodge Daytona. I have several of the GL 1968-1970 Dodge Charger castings and believe IMHO that the detail is excellent. The rear wing and front fender vents are seperate pieces on the 1969 Dodge Daytona. Playing Mantis during the days of Tom Lowe ownership made several "winged" Chrysler product castings: - 1969 Dodge Daytona Stock Car casting #079 introduced 1998. Example shown below: ![]() - 1969 Dodge Daytona casting #491 introduced 2000: Example shown below: ![]() There was also a Zinger version that was introduced in 2003: Example shown below: ![]() 1970 Plymouth Superbird casting #201 introduced 1994: Example shown below: ![]() 1970 Plymouth Superbird "Wing Thing" casting #401 from the Speed Rebel series: Example shown below: ![]() 1970 Plymouth Superbird casting #915 introduced 2005: Example shown below: ![]() There was also a Zinger version that was introduced in 2005: Example shown below: ![]() Some of the Johhny Lightning castings are better than others but you have to look at the original introduction dates to notice the evolution of the castings in detail over a period of time. I enjoyed doing this review for the viewing pleasure of others. My contribution to the subject matter. Cheers. Cobra |

I would like to see the RC version. I don't see too many RC castings at my club meets and I didn't see them around in the stores at the time. Here is the one of HWs Dodge Daytonas. It was a great casting in its day but not for the standards of today. Also HWs are dollar cars and the other brands are a little bit higher than a dollar. Can't judge the HWs casting too harshly. ![]() Edited by Firehawk73, Jan 16 2011, 02:02 PM.

My Ertl and R/C are totally different animals: Here's the R/C - a very simple beast. Nothing opens, blacked out windows, no interior and a plastic base. ![]() ![]() The Ertl is far more detailed, with opening engine and trunk (and a spare tyre!): ![]() ![]() And I have a different HWs casting too. Looks like it started life as a NASCAR - was that one of the 100% range? ![]() ![]() Take your pick which engine you prefer:

![]() Having owned the above Daytona,( that is a black 68 Hemi Charger 1 owner car setting next to the Daytona also). The green light get my vote for overall accuracy fit and finish, it appears much more tighter and crisp that the M2, while M2 are really nice they need to work on the doors fitting much better, I have seen elcheapo generics with opening doors that fit so nice it is hard to tell they even open.

I'm lovin' it!! I collect the winged Mopars, and this thread is showing me how much I don't have and don't know... whew! But it's one of the few type cars I'd like to have all castings I can find. So it looks like I have a lot of work in the future if I want a comprehensive collection. |
