The race car for today is the 2001 Saleen S7 by Hot Wheels.

Wikipedia.com

The Saleen S7 was a limited-production, hand-built, high-performance automobile developed jointly by Steve Saleen for the initial concept and direction, Hidden Creek Industries for resources and initial funding, Phil Frank Design for the body and interior CAD design and development, and Ray Mallock Ltd. for the chassis engineering,[4] and produced solely by Saleen in Irvine, California. It was the only car produced by Saleen not based on an existing chassis.

The S7 debuted on August 19, 2000 at the Monterey Historic Races. From 2000 until 2004, the S7 featured a naturally aspirated V8 engine with 550 horsepower (410 kW). In 2005, the S7 was replaced by the S7 Twin Turbo, which featured a more powerful twin-turbo system that boosted engine power to 750 horsepower (760 PS/559 kW) and the top speed 248 mph (399 km/h).

The original naturally-aspirated version of the S7 can accelerate from 0–60 miles per hour (97 km/h) in an estimated 3.2 seconds, and to 100 miles per hour in an estimated 8.1 seconds.[7] It can complete a standing quarter mile in an estimated 11.75 seconds, reaching 126 miles per hour (203 km/h).[7] The maximum top speed of the car is 223 mph (359 km/h).

This is one of my favorite castings, having done over 20 customs with it. The shape and overall look is good. The casting was designed by Phil Riehlman of Mattel, well known for a number of his designs. At a Hot Wheels convention a number of yeras ago, I had him "autograph" one of my custom S7's and he remarked that the car was one of the hardest he had ever done. I think he did a good job.

Motormax has also done a credible S7, and point for point against the HW version is quite good, but the Motormax has a blunt, squarish nose area, which is unlike the real vehicle, and keeps the HW version my favorite.

I like the near Gulf-colors, too. The comold wheels and tailpipe detail really make this stand out against a regular mainline.

For those who don't know, this is from the newer Speed Machines series.

Nice, is this from that new series with the other tampoed-up cars or a custom?

Also one of my favorite HW castings, and a great American car.

Thanks for the pics and the history. This casting is also one of my favorites, especially if done in a racing theme such as this.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
When I bought the above car in the Speed Machines series by Hot Wheels, I found it odd that they used the original tooling without the large rear wing. The latter is featured on the black race car version in the mainline, so I assumed it would be on this release, as well. I don't know how y'all feel about the "wing" on the mainline, but I don't care for it, and was glad to see the above version with the standard "spoiler" on the rear deck.
Either way, it's a Saleen S7 and one of my favorite cars! I was very impressed how well they did the decorations, especially the logotype, "Saleen" on the rear area. Niiiiice.

Ivan, the wing is correct, so I think it's just fine either way. If anything, when touted up in race colors, it should have the wing:

According to South Texas Diecast, all releases up to the most recent black mainline have been without the wing.

Since HW is trying to simulate a race car, it would probably be more apropos with the wing, but it still looks great without it.

And another great choice, I also like those "near" Gulf colors as well. I would love to see some of those customs based on this casting Crafty!
