The race car for today is Racing Champions' 1998 Chevy Monte Carlo Stock Car.

The original Monte Carlo debuted in the 1970 model year as a personal luxury coupe, although the high-performance SS454 trim joined the lineup midyear. Throughout the '70s and '80s the car's focus shifted from luxury to value, to a diesel engine (!), then to performance, with the third-generation car finally being discontinued in 1988. The current Monte Carlo's shape is a favorite in stock car racing, and Monte Carlo-bodied cars have had considerable success on the NASCAR circuit. Monte Carlo is built on the same front-wheel-drive platform as the Lumina, and is the bestseller in its class. While the sporty Z34 is purchased mostly by men, women make up the majority of Monte Carlo LS buyers.

Surprise, for those of you who though old #8 was going to be Dale, Jr., no, it was HUT STICKLIN in the CIRCUIT CITY car. This was the last year Stricklin drove in a Cup series car, having been a regular for a lot of years. Stricklin holds the distinction like a number of well known drivers who NEVER won a cup race.

He was my favorite underdog, being a good mannered middle of the pack driver. He had his moments, but just never won. But he was well known, and Monogram even had 1/24 scale kits of several of his cars prior to this #8 Chevy.

We see a LOT of history and changes in this CotD selection. Racing Champions was probably at the top of their game during this time----you could go to Walmart and for a dollar or a bit more, just about get ANY Cup driver's car and could complete the entire 42 car field for a race diorama. Plus, they did issue the novelty schemes such as this one----the red. white, and blue version (Firecracker 500) of what normally was a red, white and black car.

Now Stavola Brothers team that owned #8 is no more; Circuit City went bankrupt and disolved; the Monte Carlo is no longer available from Chevrolet, and of course Hut no longer races in NASCAR. And while there was great improvement in the details by Racing Champions' mainline cars, the demand for "every" car soon would start to wane, RC began to decline in sales, and now only the very popular drivers are available by Action/Winner's Circle.

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
Hut was always among my favorite drivers. He did race a few years past this, but this was his last full time ride in the Cup series. I only played the full championship on NASCAR '98 once, but I did so as Hut and won. So at least Hut will have that distinction. I didn't even do that for Bill Elliott!

To this day I think Darlington '96 (Southern 500) should have been Hut's. He blew past Gordon after the last pit stop, after dominating most of the day but then some problems developed with the car and he ended up second to Jeff. *Sighs* That's as close he ever got to Victory Lane.

Lets see if i can remember Hut drove the # 8 back from the early 90s when it was the buick # 8 Snickers sponsored car. I would say 1991 or 92. spent a short time driving the # 12 raybestos brakes ford. in 93 and 94. I dont recall if it was in the winston cup or busch grand national. Might have the years mixed up im working purely off memory. if someone wants to check me be my guest.

He was in the #12 Bobby Allison car for a few years with Raybestos Brakes. Hut's also a member of the Alabama Gang via marriage. He may not be from Hueytown but he was born in AL.

Very informative, Ivan :)

I never was a NASCAR fan...but my sister has been, for a long time (a legacy of her lazy, employment-averse sloth of an ex-husband), and I used to make gifts of the Gordon cars to her from time to time. I even saved one or two of them for myself. Not so long ago, I got a Casey Kahne car for myself at Brickell's.
