The first local derby of the year got underway this evening. It had been cold and rainy all day but the rain held off for the action tonight. The format of Spring Explosion changed this year pushing the show to a two day format. Tonight they ran qualifying heats for the team derby class. 11 teams of 4 cars competed vs each other in single elimination battles. The last heat featured 3 teams with 2 of those making the A Main feature Saturday. The essence of a team derby is this, 4 drivers take on 4 other drivers at the same time, the first team to eliminate the other one wins and advances to the Feature A on Saturday. Each team can have at maximum, two old iron cars and the rest must be '80 and newer. The new style Fords are allowed to tilt the front ends which can make them actually stronger than the 70s GM roundbacks. Derby Icons is the promoter for this event. They allow welding of the top side of the frame from the A-Arms forward. No leaf spring conversions are allowed and drivers must use the stock rear suspension. All the doors and trunk lid can be welded shut and they allow steel thread to be placed in 6 spots on the front end/hood. New for this year is the Demolition Cup. This nation wide point series is a group effort by 7 different promoters across USA to help set up qualifiers at regional derbies. Of the 15 elible in the 5 regions, 5 from each region will advance to the National Championship demo derby later this year. Spring Explosion is a points qualifier. The Demolition Cup will have in excess of $37,000 in cash prizes. Drivers in the team heats tonight came from all over the midwest to compete for the $8,000 first place prize. One team had members from Minnesota and North Dakota while other drivers were from Kansas, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Illinois. Tomorrow they will run the feature heats of beginners (13-19 year olds), trucks, compacts, 80s+, and the A and B features of the team derby. Now onto the pics! I noticed of the new style Fords than were ran tonight, most were of the '98+ bodystyle and they seemed to dominate the 70s iron at the show. Granted they had been tilted and none of these cars had any stock parts on them mechanically speaking, but it goes to show that you don't need old iron to compete and dominate in derbies. I'll post pics of the Saturday heats for all classes late Saturday. Tonights show as nothing short of hardcore derbying at its best!

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!

Looks like a good show! I'm glad to see the newer cars are doing better in the derbies. Maybe that will leave some of the Roundbacks and Rivvies for preservation... |

AWESOME! Never been to a derby, but it looks like great fun. Thanks for the pics...I feel like I was there! Your next-to-last pic of number 9 that was in focus, but everything else was "in motion" is quite an excellent effect.
