Mercury cars were first introduced just before WWII began. They were introduced by Ford Motor Corp as a midline marque to sell between the expensive Lincoln and lowpriced Ford products. The Mercury cars, at first , used Ford styling. but in 1949, the cars adopted more styling features from the Lincoln. By that time Mercury became part of the Lincoln- Mercury Division of Ford Motor Corporation where the marque still is located for sales at present. This marque has been successful in sales as the little brother to Lincoln. For example, the 1949-1951 cars were and are in great demand for customizers.

In the mid 1950s, Mercury and Ford introduced Plexiglas tinted roof panels in some of their more sporty models. The Mercury "Sun Valley" lasted for a few years until Mercury introduced their radically styled "Turnpike Cruiser" products in 1957. These new cars featured many innovative styling concepts. Among them was a reverse slanted rear window and concave rear fender fins. Some of these styling concepts did not appeal to the consumer public and Mercury soon modified their design.

In 1967 Mercury introduced their sister / companion car to the already successful selling Ford Mustang.
It was called the Cougar and its style was limited to a 2 door hardtop when it first was announced.
At its onset, the car contributed to the American Muscle Era with the Eliminator. The Cougar name later was used as a model series until 1997. During this time Cougars were also produced as Convertibles, Station Wagons and Sedans.

In 1999, a new Cougar was introduced. But it had no relationship to the former cars, since it was a much smaller 2 door 4 passenger product from Ford of Europe. This model was discontinued in 2001.

Also during this period , another car from Europe was imported and sold as a Mercury Capri. In Europe these were called Ford Capris. This car line has also disappeared.

Recently announced is the official edict that Mercury will cease production operations the end of this year!

Small scale models of the Mercury are fairly plentiful since many toy/ model manufacturers have provided models to the collectors over the years. The following companies are recognized , but there may be others I have missed . Additions are welcome.

These companies are Ertl , RC2, Racing Champions, Corgi Jr/ Corgi , Schuco, Grell, Playart, Street Rebels ( Playing Mantis), Johnny Lightning, Majorette, Motor Max, Castline M2 Machines, Hot Wheels, Matchbox,
First Gear, Maisto, Jet Wheel, Yat Ming, Jada and Greenlight .

Motor Trend Magazine lists Mercury cars for 2011, thu the finale date has been edited!

I like the Hot Wheels 1956 Mercury very much - it is one of the few toy models I have bought recently of any brand.

The "premium line" two-tone aqua/cream scheme is prettier than the wild green with flames that I have, but to find an opening hood on a $1.00 toy today is a "rare event!"

N.B.: Some real 1956 Mercurys had vinyl arm rests on the doors, a detail I am glad is missing from the Hot Wheels toy model. (it looks like it's painted over on the "premium" edition, and lacking from the $1.00 "hot auction" toy).

Doug on MCCH indicated that it was announced that this marque may soon be discontinued! The latest to hit the dust!
Who will be next?

I need to pull out my Merc's. Nice photo's guys! I hate to see another model die. Ford is investing the Mercury money into the Lincoln line.
