Support your local demo derby.

The second day of Spring Explosion was a wet and soggy one. The track was still damp from the previous nights action and they watered the track too much. This led a very slow heat for the beginners class.

The trucks class rocked hardcore. Only a few basic safety rules are followed but otherwise allow for building of super tough trucks. No stuffed frames, no kickers to the front end and no homemade bumpers are allowed. Outside of that the frames could be reinforced with kickers from the drivers cage. There were plenty of super wicked drivetrains in these trucks with mega 400+ horsepower. Easily the day's most hardest hitting event. Several suburbans were mixed into the action. In all 17 entries in this one shot feature event.

The orange Suburban had a broken right rear axle that eventually popped off. Action was stopped to retrieve from the track due to safety concerns.

#18 Jason Hall from nearby Paris, IL would win the Icon Instigator award for most aggressive driver.

The silver truck would end up making the last hit as the final 4 running trucks all ended up hooked up together and unable to move, thus the silver truck took 1st.

The weather really started to suck right as they started the compact feature. The derby gods apparently thought it was time to add more water to the track and thus a small monsoon stormed the grounds.

There was about 4 guys in white Chevy Luminas who drove together as a team. Thus it ended up being all the other drivers trying to take them out. The wheelbase max for Derby Icon's compact class in a rather un-compact like 108", thus the Luminas seem like the car to have as they have the max 108 wb.

The white #71 Lumina was declared the winner and the green fwd car 2nd place after 24x car had two fires in succession and disqualified. This was despite the green car putting on a heck of a show. Thus we the fans booed the promoters tremendously. A minute after our booing started, the announcer said the officials made a mistake and that the green car did indeed win the event. The white Chevy had bent so bad in the middle that it was really unable to move forward very much and was only making small taps, and not actual hits.

As they were clearing off the track lightning strikes within 5 miles of the track forced the Fire Chief to order evacuation of the open air aluminum grandstands. Virtually everyone was soaked. I had brought my younger sister with me and she wanted to leave. So I missed the 37 car field in the '80+ class and the Feature A & B Team Derby features. The Team derby would be won by the Derbytees All Star Team which had two '98+ tilted Fords, a mid 70s Rivy and a full size GM 70s sedan. They won $8,000 for first.

All in all a great two day derby. The ticket prices are steep, $25 for one day or $40 for both but the proceeds do go to the Georgetown Youth Association. The rain didn't help matters much. Drivers and fans from North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Kansas, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and Illinois were at the show. In the few short years that Spring Explosion has been held at Georgetown, it has grown by leaps and bounds. Overall there was minimal sandbagging since they changed the overall format to pay the guys that make big hits instead of solely just the drivers who place in the top 3 of their classes.

Demo derbies are a huge thing in this area of Eastern Illinois and Western Indiana as just directly 12 miles east of Georgetown, IL Cayuga Indiana holds the year end Battle at The Border derby in November which had almost 120 entries last year. Spring Explosion ended up with around 115 entries spread over 5 classes. Hopefully Derby Icons can fix what problems they had with this year's show and improve for next year.

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
Thanks for the pics! I know everyone says compacts are the future of demolition derby, but I think the proof of the future is in your pictures of the trucks/SUVs. Rear wheel drive, full size vehicles that don't bend in one hit. Sounds like a good future to me, and let's face it, the reason there are so few old beater full size cars from the '90s and '00s is because everyone bought these instead of full frame sedans and wagons.

"Tanks" again for the great pics! Gives me some ideas about making my own derby cars...

I see a couple of Fox-bodied 'stangs out there...#80 looks like a sub-compact after some major damage :P
